## Creating a Ranger As you create your ranger character, consider the nature of the training that gave you your particular capabilities. Did you train with a single mentor, wandering the wilds together until you mastered the ranger’s ways? Did you leave your apprenticeship, or was your mentor slain? Or perhaps you learned your skills as part of a band of rangers affiliated with a druidic circle, trained in mystic paths as well as wilderness lore. You might be self-taught, a recluse who learned combat skills, tracking, and even a magical connection to nature through the necessity of surviving in the wilds. Ask yourself what made you join up with a band of adventurers? Do you find it challenging to teach new allies the ways of the wild, or do you welcome the relief from solitude that they offer? ## Class Features As a Ranger, you gain the following Class Features. #### Hit Points ___ - **Hit Dice:** 1d10 per Ranger level - **Hit Points at 1st level:** 10 + your Constitution modifier - **Hit Points at Higher Levels:** 1d10 (or 6) + your Constitution modifier per Ranger level after 1st #### Starting Proficiencies You are proficient with the following items, in addition to any Proficiencies provided by your race or Background. ___ - **Armor:** Light Armor, Medium Armor, Shields - **Weapons:** Simple Weapons, Martial Weapons - **Tools:** none - **Saving Throws:** Strength, Dexterity - **Skills:** Choose three from Animal Handling, Athletics, Insight, Investigation, Nature, Perception, Stealth, and Survival #### Starting Equipment You start with the following Equipment, in addition to the Equipment granted by your background: - *(a)* Scale Mail or *(b)* Leather Armor - *(a)* two shortswords or *(b)* two simple Melee Weapons - *(a)* a Dungeoneer's Pack or *(b)* an Explorer's Pack - A Longbow, a Quiver of 20 Arrows and a druidic focus \pagebreakNum ### Favored Foe *1st Level Ranger feature* ___ You can focus your attention on a creature to make your attacks more accurate. As a bonus action, you can choose a creature within 30 feet of you to mark as your foe. For 1 minute, you can add your Wisdom modifier (with a minimum bonus of +1) to your attack rolls with weapons against that creature. Those attack rolls can also critically hit on a 19 or 20 on a d20. This effect ends early if the creature drops to 0 Hit Points, you fall unconscious or you choose another creature as your foe. You can only mark one creature as your foe at a time. You must finish a short or long rest before you can use this ability again. At 6th level, you can use this ability twice before taking a short or long rest, and at 14th level, you can use this ability three times before taking a short or long rest. ### Natural Explorer *1st Level Ranger feature* ___ You are particularly familiar with one type of natural environment and are adept at traveling and surviving in such regions. Choose one type of favored terrain from the Favored Terrain table. You can double your proficiency bonus on your Intelligence and Wisdom checks related to a favored terrain if you have proficiency in that skill. You also gain additional bonuses based on your selected favored terrain. These bonuses represent your experience and exposure to that environment and you apply them regardless of the terrain you find yourself in. You choose one additional favored terrain type at 6th level and again at 10th level. You cannot choose the same terrain more than once. ### Fighting Style *2nd Level Ranger feature* ___ You adopt a particular style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one of the following options. You can’t take a Fighting Style option more than once, even if you later get to choose again. #### Archery You gain a +2 bonus to Attack rolls you make with Ranged Weapons. #### Defense While you are wearing armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC. #### Dueling When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other Weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to Damage Rolls with that weapon. #### Two-Weapon Fighting When you engage in Two-Weapon Fighting, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the second Attack. ##### Favored Terrain | Terrain | Additional Bonus | |:---|:-----------| | Arctic | You have resistance to cold damage | | Coast | You have a swimming speed equal to your walking speed and you have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks to swim in rough water | | Desert | You have resistance to fire damage | | Forest | You have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track creatures and you also learn their exact number, their sizes, and how long ago they passed through the area when tracking them| | Grassland | Your walking speed is increased by 5 feet and when traveling alone you can move stealthily at a normal pace | | Mountain | You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed and you have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks to climb difficult surfaces | | Swamp | You have resistance to poison damage and advantage on saving throws against poison. | | Underdark | You learn two languages of your choice. You also can't be tracked by nonmagical means, unless you choose to leave a trail | ### Spellcasting *2nd Level Ranger feature* ___ You have learned to use the magical essence of nature to cast spells, much as a druid does. #### Preparing and Casting Spells The Ranger table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest. You prepare the list of ranger spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the ranger spell list. When you do so, choose a number of ranger spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + half your ranger level, rounded down (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For example, if you are a 5th-level ranger, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With a Wisdom of 14, your list of prepared spells can include four spells of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination; if you prepare the 1st-level spell Animal Friendship and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast Animal Friendship using either slot. Casting the spell doesn't remove it from your list of prepared spells. #### Spellcasting Ability Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your ranger spells, since your magic draws on your attunement to nature. \pagebreakNum You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a ranger spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one. #### Spellcasting Focus You can use a druidic focus as a spellcasting focus for your Ranger spells.
**Spell Save DC** =
8 + your proficiency bonus +
your Wisdom modifier
**Spell attack modifier** =
your proficiency bonus +
your Wisdom modifier
___ ___ ### Beast Empathy *3rd Level Ranger feature* ___ Your mastery of ranger lore allows you to establish a powerful link to the beasts of the land. You have an innate ability to communicate with beasts, and they recognize you as a kindred spirit. Through sounds and gestures, you can communicate simple ideas to a beast as an action, and can read its basic mood and intent. You learn its emotional state, whether it is affected by magic of any sort, its short-term needs (such as food or safety), and actions you can take (if any) to persuade it to not attack. You cannot use this ability against a creature that you have attacked within the past 10 minutes. ___ ### Ranger Conclave *3rd Level Ranger feature* ___ You choose an archetype that you strive to emulate, such as the Hunter, Beastmaster, Gloomstalker, Horizon Walker, Monster Slayer, Fey Wanderer or Swarmkeeper. Your choice grants features at 3rd Level, and again at 7th, 11th, and 15th level. ___ #### Conclave Spells Some ranger conclaves allow you to learn extra spells. You gain access to these spells as you gain levels specified in the conclave’s description. Once you gain access to the spell, you always have it prepared and it doesn’t count towards the number of spells you prepare each day. If you gain a Conclave spell that doesn’t appear in the Ranger spell list, that spell is considered a Ranger spell for you. ### Ability Score Improvement *4th Level Ranger feature* ___ When you reach 4th Level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two Ability Scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature. ___ \columnbreak ### Extra Attack *5th Level Ranger feature* ___ You can Attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on Your Turn. ___ ### Land's Stride *8th Level Ranger feature* ___ Moving through nonmagical Difficult Terrain costs you no extra Movement. You can also pass through nonmagical Plants without being slowed by them and without taking damage from them if they have thorns, spines, or a similar hazard. In addition, you have advantage on Saving Throws against Plants that are magically created or manipulated to impede Movement, such those created by the Entangle spell. ___ ### Hide In Plain Sight *10th Level Ranger feature* ___ Starting at 10th level, you can use your bonus action to magically blend into your environment and become invisible. You can remain invisible for up to 1 hour and you become visible if you attack, cast a spell or you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell). You can also choose become visible as a bonus action. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once) and you regain all uses when you finish a long rest. ___ ### Prime Strike *14th Level Ranger feature* ___ Your study of dangerous creatures has honed your fighting skills. You can add your Wisdom modifier (minimum of +1) to the damage rolls of your weapon attacks. ___ ### Feral Senses *18th Level Ranger feature* ___ You gain preternatural Senses that help you fight creatures you can't see. When you Attack a creature you can't see, your inability to see it doesn't impose disadvantage on your Attack rolls against it. You are also aware of the location of any Invisible creature within 30 feet of you, provided that the creature isn't hidden from you and you aren't Blinded or Deafened. ___ ### Foe Slayer *20th Level Ranger feature* ___ You become an unparalleled hunter of your enemies. When you roll initiative, and you have no uses of Favored Foe left, you regain one use. \pagebreakNum
\columnbreak ## Design Goals: Basically, the idea was to make the ranger resemble something closer to 3.5e or Pathfinder, but with some attempts to streamline it. ##### Accurate: The ranger is now focused on being accuracy based in combat (similar to vengance paladin or samurai fighter). Favored Foe allows you to focus fire a target to land your shots while Foe Slayer grants you an extra use of Favored Foe when you're out. ##### Stealthy: Hide in Plain Sight combines what it and Vanish did to a greater degree, allowing you to turn invisible to slip away, scout, or get the drop on someone. ##### Experienced: Rangers pick up skills from their time spent in the wild: - Natural Explorer now provides a small buff based on your terrain (even if you're not on it). - You now prepare spells each day, much like the paladin or artificer, to pick up spells when the situation calls for it. - Beast Empathy is a replacement for Primeval Awareness that acts as a buffed version of the forest gnome's speak with small beasts (situational, but flavorful). - Prime Strike grants you a small late-game damage buff, rather than having it locked on creature types like Favored Enemy used to do in 3.5e. ___ Some unused ideas went towards a rework of the Hunter subclass. ### Tasha's Content Many of these abilities in this fix now use some of the replacement feature content from Tasha's. However, you can still apply some of them: - Extra fighting styles and Martial Versatility can still be used - Natures Veil if you'd prefer the quick invisibility. - Deft Explorer for consistent buffs instead of pick-and-choose - Favored Foe still works with this version of Foe Slayer - Druidic Focus you can drop, since I included the focus as part of spellcasting. - Primal Awareness can technically be used in place of Beast Empathy... (change known to always prepared for the spells)
