College of Imitation

Bards of the college of imitation bond with a young mimic and learn its ways to improve their techniques and learn their secrets.

College of Imitation Features
Bard Level Features
3rd Bonus Proficiency, Fiddle Familiar
6th Decoy, Living Weapon
14th Mimic of Many Forms

Bonus Proficiency

When you choose this college at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with the disguise kit. If you are already proficient with it, you add double your proficiency bonus to checks you make with it.

Fiddle Familiar

Also at 3rd level, you gain the service of an infant mimic, which serves as your familiar, instrument, and spellcasting focus. See this creature’s game statistics in the fiddle familiar stat block.

The fiddle familiar spends most of its time the form of an instrument with which you are proficient. But like any mimic, it can take the form of any tiny object. As a bonus action, you can command your fiddle familiar to assume the form of any one-handed weapon with which you are proficient.

While you are wielding your fiddle familiar, creatures have disadvantage on checks made to disarm you. And any successful attack against a creature with your fiddle familiar activates its Adhesive ability.

If your familiar dies, you may expend 50 GP worth of exotic substances over the course of a long rest, to attract a new one.

Decoy

Starting at 6th level, you've taken a lesson or two from your familiar to help your disguises.

You can cast alter self to change your appearance without spending a spell slot a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once). When you cast alter self in this way, you do not need to concentrate on it.

Living Weapon

Also at 6th level, your familiar can help in its own way. While transformed into a weapon, your familiar can use its Action to attack, using its chosen form's damage as its own. Its attack bonus is 3 + your Proficiency modifier.

Your familiar acts after your turn in the initiative and obeys any commands you give (no action required by you).

Mimic of Many Forms

Beginning at 14th level, you may spend a spell slot of 4th level or higher as an action, to polymorph your fiddle familiar into any creature or object with which you are familiar, as long as it does not have a CR greater than your level and is a beast or monstrosity.

While polymorphed this way, your familiar assumes the statistics of the new form, including its actions, but continues to function as a familiar.

It stays transformed for up to 1 minute or until you end it early as a bonus action.

Shapechanger. The mimic can use its action to polymorph into an object or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Grappler. The mimic has advantage on attack rolls against any creature grappled by it.

Adhesive (Object Form Only). The mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Medium or smaller creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 8 + your Charisma modifier + your Proficiency bonus). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.

False Appearance (Object Form Only). While the mimic remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary object.

Familiar. The fiddle familiar serves as your familiar, forming a magic, telepathic bond with you. While the two of you are bonded, you can sense what the fiddle familiar senses as long as they are within 1 mile of each other. While the fiddle familiar is in the form of a weapon, you have advantage on attack rolls with it against any creature it is grappling.
