# Artificer Speciality: Bio Engineer DNA is the code upon which organic creatures are based. Bio Engineers acknowledge this, and recognise that this code can be manipulated to both weaken their enemies and enhance themselves and their allies. They are often found in laboratories, in the employ of crazy wizards, but are usually all too happy to take their expertise to the field for some live testing. ### Tool Proficiency When you choose this speciality at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with alchemist’s supplies. If you already had proficiency in these tools, you may instead choose to gain proficiency with a different set of artisan’s tools of your choice. ### Bio Engineer Spells You always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Bio Engineer Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare. | Artificer Level | Spells | |:---:|:-----------:| | 1st | *Hex, Inflict Wounds* | | 5th | *Alter Self, Dragon’s Breath* | | 9th | *Life Transference, Vampiric Touch* | | 13th | *Death Ward, Polymorph* | | 17th | *Contagion, Enervation* | ### Mutagen At 3rd level, you develop a transmission method for magically altering a creature’s DNA for short periods of time. When you target yourself or a willing friendly creature with an artificer spell of 1st level or higher, you may apply one of your Beneficial Mutagens to them (chosen from the list below). When a hostile creature fails its saving throw against, or is hit with the attack roll from, one of your artificer spells of 1st level or higher, you may apply one of your Detrimental Mutagens to them (chosen from the tables at the end of this class description). You must cast the spells through your alchemist’s supplies to apply a mutagen, and you cannot apply your mutagens to constructs. You may apply one Beneficial and one Detrimental Mutagen each, and you regain all expended mutagens when you finish a short or long rest. A mutagen remains active on a creature until it takes a short or long rest, or until it is targeted with an effect that cures poison or disease, such as the lesser restoration spell. The mutagen names are simply placeholders to represent the intended effect. If your target's physiology does not make sense for the name, feel free to change it. For instance a creature that uses its arms to propel itself, perhaps using a wheelchair, would gain increased muscle density in its arms, not its calves, to gain the movement speed buff. ### Cellular Instability At 5th level, you may add your proficiency bonus to the damage rolls of your weapon attacks and spells against creatures you have applied your Detrimental Mutagens to. ### Evolution in a Bottle From 9th level, you can use potions as a delivery mechanism for your mutagens. When you craft a potion using your alchemist’s supplies, you may expend an additional 50gp to add one of your Beneficial or Detrimental Mutagens to it, the effects of which are applied when the creature drinks the potion. Regardless of the potion’s duration, the Mutagen lasts until the creature’s next short or long rest, or until they are targeted with an effect that cures poison or disease. This does not consume a use of your Mutagen feature. ### Sequential Manipulator At 15th level, you may now use your Beneficial and Detrimental Mutagens twice per rest each. Additionally, you may expend two uses of your Mutagen feature at once (both uses must come from the same Mutagen) to apply an Enhanced Mutagen using the feature. You may not apply these enhanced versions as part of your Mutation in a Bottle feature. Due to the instability of manifesting such an extreme mutation, your Enhanced Mutagens remain active on a creature for 1 minute, or until it is targeted by an effect that cures poison or disease.
