Martial Archetype: Witch Knight

Witch Knights are fighters who have dedicated themselves to understanding the dark powers of the occult to enhance their abilities. They mimic the habits of witches, and often ally themselves with other practitioners of the dark arts. Witch Knights specialize in curses, preferring to subject their enemies to a slow rotting death.

Spellcasting

When you reach 3rd level, you augment your martial prowess with the ability to cast spells.

Spell Slots

The Witch Knight Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a short or long rest.

For example, if you know the 1st-level spell Bane and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast Bane using either slot.

Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher

You know three 1st-level witch knight spells of your choice.

The Spells Known column of the Witch Knight Spellcasting table shows when you learn more witch knight spells of 1st level or higher. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 7th level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.

Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the Witch Knight spells you know with another spell of your choice from the Witch Knight spell list. The new spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

Spellcasting Ability

Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your witch knight spells, since you learn your spells through study and memorization. You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a witch knight spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier

Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier

Witch Knight's Curse

Beginning at 3rd level, you gain the ability to place a rotting curse on someone. As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target is cursed for 1 minute. The curse ends early if the target dies, you die, or you are incapacitated. Until the curse ends, the creature gains the following effects:

  • The cursed creature's speed is reduced by half and it can't take reactions.

  • When the cursed creature makes an attack roll, it must subtract a number equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of +1) from the roll.

  • When the cursed creature uses either an action or a Bonus Action, it takes necrotic damage equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of +1).

You can’t use this feature again until you finish a short or long rest.

Occult Familiar

At 7th level, you learn how to call upon a witch's familiar. You learn the Find Familiar spell and can cast it as a ritual. It doesn't count against the number of Witch Knights spells you know, and you can cast it without a material component. You can also cast it once without using a spell slot, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest.

Additionally, when you take the Attack action, you can allow your familiar to use its reaction to make one of your attacks originate from it.

War Magic

Starting at 10th level, you can mix your spellcasting with your martial prowess. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can cast a spell in place of one of your weapon attacks.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Witch Knight Spell List

Master of Hexes

At 15th level, you can spread your Witch Knight's Curse from a slain creature to another creature. When the creature cursed by your Witch Knight's Curse dies, you can apply the curse to a different creature you can see within 30 feet of you, provided you aren't incapacitated.

Witch Lord

Beginning at 18th level, you can sacrifice your life force to empower your spells. When you cast a spell using a slot that is of a higher level than the spell, instead of expending a higher level slot you can choose to expend the slot that the spell would normally be cast at and number of hitdice equal to double the level of the slot that you are casting at (maximum of 4th level). When you cast a spell this way, you must roll the hitdice expended and take damage equal to the number rolled.
