# Monstrous Races ## Thri-Kreen These desert-dwelling insectoids can be found on countless worlds in remote wastelands. They avoid other races and lead nomadic lives sustained by the hunt. While they prefer their isolation, sometimes it becomes necessary to deal with outsiders. In these times, the Thri-kreen prove to be fierce and crucial allies. ### Harsh Domains Thri-kreen are most at home in arid, hot climates that are rife with thorny brush, jagged stones, and treacherous gulches. This affinity means they rarely compete with other humanoids for territory, but their survival depends on managing what sparse resources the land may offer. As such, the Thri-kreen are considered shrewd to the point of callousness. They take no issue with eating the flesh of sapient races or engaging in cannibalism, seeing meat as meat regardless of source. Despite outsiders calling the practice cruel, the Thri-kreen are anything but. They do not seek out humanoid meat, only eating that which is already dead or dying. ### Unflinching Ferocity Thri-Kreen are scornfully known as the 'Mantis Warriors' by outsiders. Indeed, when roused to battle these bugs are a hellish enemy to contend with. While they usually ignore settlers on their land, their mercy lasts only as long as these neighbors do not pose a threat Thri-kreen's stability. Despoilers, slavers, and agitators will feel the vicious sting of their justice. Anything that would tilt the natural balance out of order is dealt with quickly and utterly. Supplies are stolen, tools and machines broken down, and key figures assassinated. There is a surgical nature to these disruptions, wasting neither life nor material but crippling the enemy nonetheless. This is not a kindness, but rather a natural consequence of the Thri-kreen's pragmatic values. Surrender is readily accepted, but repeat offenders are punished with appropriate ferocity. They are not naive to deception, and will respond to lies with long-enduring suspicion. Do not expect to cross a Thri-kreen and be easily forgiven. ### Alien Culture Outsiders believe the Thri-kreen are without personality, emotions, or a sense of self. This isn't exactly true. They are not lacking these traits, rather, they express themselves in a manner that is foreign to other humanoids. Without lips to smile, they express contentment through their attitudes and body language. Without a voice like that of humans, their communication is hard to understand.
Their religion is closely tied to their world view and their self image. Thri-kreen believe that they are noble hunters, wardens, and cultivators of the wildlands. Appropriately, they lend their reverence to nature spirits and gods of the hunt such as Sylvanus. They can learn to speak through their clickering and chattering, but their voices will only ever be a hissed mimicry of the languages they learn. Language barriers are a massive obstacle to dealings with outsiders, which has caused many Thri-kreen to develop a talent for artistry and visual expression. ### Thri-Kreen Names While the Thri-Kreen do have names, they're difficult for other races to pronounce. Translations use harsh phonetics, with clicking and hisses recreated. Syllables are usually clipped short with only a few letters each. The heavy use of soft 'x' pronounced similar to a 'z' is common. The difference between genders is negligible physically and culturally, and names are likewise unisex. **Names:** Akiks, Xikxik, Stetikix, Edixik, Dedaxek. \pagebreakNum ### Thri-Kreen Traits Thri-Kreen adventurers have the following traits in common. **Ability Score Increase.** Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and either your Strength or Constitution score increases by 1. **Age.** Thri-Kreen have an unknown lifespan. It seems they live up to 35 years but as they are reclusive sorts, this is not a confirmed fact and just an outsider theory. **Alignment.** The Thri-Kreen lead isolated lives and thus lean towards a chaotic neutral perspective. **Size.** Thri-Kreen have varied sizes, with height ranging between 4 feet to 7 feet tall and weight usually half that of a creature of similar size. Your size is Medium. **Speed.** Your base movement speed is 40 feet. **Darkvision.** Your compounded eyes are made to hunt at night, and you have 60 feet of Darkvision. **Sleepless.** When you can take a long rest, you can replace your sleep with a four-hour trance. You must remain motionless during this time, during which you are fully conscious and can see and hear as normal. **Chameleon Carapace.** You have natural armor with an AC equal to 12 + your Dexterity modifier. Your exoskeleton can change color and texture to match your environment, so you can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by the environment. **Standing Leap.** Your long jump and high jump reach their maximum distance with or without a running start. **Four Arms.** You have 4 arms; 2 large clawed arms at your shoulders and 2 smaller limbs just beneath and attached at the ribs. The upper arms function as normal limbs. The lower arms cannot brace shields, but they can interact with simple objects, perform the somatic components of spells, and use weapons with the *Light* property. You do not gain additional attacks from these arms. **Languages.** You speak Common and Thri-Kreen, a language spoken by clicking your mandibles and twitching your antennae. This language cannot be spoken by any non-insect creature. \columnbreak
> **Racial Score: 31** > >The Thri-Kreen are a fairly powerful race; measuring up to the Eladrin and Shadar-Kai while just barely trailing behind Variant Humans, Yuan-Ti, and Satyrs. They have a lot of mobility gimmicks that make them fairly useful in a variety of situations, providing a great deal of options in the place of singularly powerful traits. > >While no single trait will outshine the likes of Magic Resistance or a free feat, the Thri-kreen have tools for several situations which makes them very utility oriented. Caution advised when allowing this race! >
