Star Eaters

"Do you see that collection of stars there? That is the constellation Fanum Vermilion. You see how the string of stars forms a set of antlers? They say it is becau- Wait. One of the stars disappeared. Hold on. Let me peer through the telescope... By the gods, it's a Star Eater." - Astronomer Varmir Erna.

Star Eaters. Of the elder elementals, the Star Eater is the only one who's natural plane of existence is of the material. Astronomers have documented them for centuries, as they themselves fly among the cosmic sea, consuming the brilliant light of stars in their voracious existence. Thankfully, they appear to steer clear of worlds with life teeming on its surface, but they dine on stars that are close to dying. Those that have met a Star Eater, have stated that they are usually androgynous (although some take on more masculine, or feminine figures), and are apathetic, or appear to be. Their form is the most blackest of nights and were it not for the light that bends around them, they would be practically invisible.

Born from dead stars. A Star Eater knows only endless hunger upon its birth. It is filled with such god-like power, that in its first millennium of life, it may unconsciously destroy whole systems of stars and planets in their blunder to better understand themselves. Given, that time is malleable while around the Star Eater, they have eons to learn and grow, although it may appear as if only a century has passed for those counting. To help stave off this hunger, Star Eaters consume stars, both bright and old to fuel their bottomless stomach. However, some have discovered that making pacts with those that wish for a fragment of their strength help their hunger pangs in the long run. Better to let others feed them, than themselves.

Destroyer of Galaxies. To most life in the universe; not many beings perceive the destruction of whole galaxies, but those that do understand the sheer power capable of doing such a thing. These individuals will sometimes create entire temples of worship to a Star Eater, for it's power is visible, tangible, and sometimes the belief in a Star Eater is far greater than a greater god of the pantheon. For it is untethered, free and incredibly intelligent. While it may be unaligned, or lack ambition, it's curiosity has lead many a worlds to greatness, and many to ruin. While hard to anger, it is best not provoked. To anger a Star Eater is to willingly doom your entire world.

Destroyer. The star eater deals double damage to objects and structures.

Innate Spellcasting. The star eater's innate spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 27, +19 to hit). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

At will: Telekinesis, Pulse Wave (5th-level), Guiding Bolt (5th-level)

3/day each: Gravity Fissure, Disintegrate, Temporal Shunt

1/day each: Ravenous Void, Time Ravage, Reality Break

Legendary Resistances (3/day). If the star eater fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Limited Magic Immunity. The star eater can't be affected or detected by spells of 6th level or lower unless it wishes to be. It has advantage on saving throws against all other spells and magical effects.

Weight of the Stars. Any creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of the star eater, or enters the aura for the first time on their turn must succeed on a DC 27 Constitution saving throw or take 24 (7d6) force damage and have their speed halved until the start of their next turn.

Actions

Multiattack. The star eater can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes five cataclysmic flick attacks. Up to two of these attacks can be substituted with the polarizing tap instead.

Cataclysmic Flick. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8 + 10) bludgeoning or force damage (star eater's choice). If the target is a creature, the star eater can force it to make a DC 27 strength saving throw, or be thrown up to 50 feet, taking a d6 of damage for each 10 feet traveled. If the creature hits an object that would stop it from traveling the full distance, it takes the full damage as if it had traveled the full distance. Each flick creates a thunderclap that can be heard out to a range of 1,200 feet.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the star eater's choice within 120 feet of it and aware of it must succeed on a DC 27 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, with disadvantage if the star eater is within line of sight, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the star eater's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Polarizing Tap. The star eater touches a creature within 5 feet of it, forcing them to make a DC 27 constitution saving throw or being tethered to the location they reside. The creature cannot move more than 30 feet from where they started. If they do, they must succeed a DC 27 Strength check, taking 20 (4d10) force damage on a failed save. On a successful save, the creature is no longer tethered and takes no damage. This ability ends at the end of the creature's next turn if it cannot escape. If two creatures are affected by this ability and are within 30 feet of each other, they are instead polarized to one another. Both collide, occupying the same space and are restrained for the duration.

Full Force Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 147 (15d12 + 50) bludgeoning or force damage (star eater's choice). If the target is a creature, the star eater can force it to make a DC 27 strength saving throw, or be thrown up to 100 feet, taking a d6 of damage for each 10 feet traveled. If the creature hits an object that would stop it from traveling the full distance, it takes the full damage as if it had traveled the full distance. This punch creates a thunderclap that can be heard out to a range of 2 miles.

Gravity Well (Recharge 5-6). Each creature within a 60-foot-radius sphere centered on the star eater must make a DC 27 Constitution saving throw or take 110 (20d10) force damage and be knocked prone. On a successful save, creatures take half damage and are not knocked prone.

Legendary Actions

The star eater can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The star eater regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Attack. The star eater makes one cataclysmic flick attack.

Move. The star eater moves up to half its speed.

Cast a Spell (Costs 2 Actions). The star eater casts a spell.

Swallow the Light (Costs 2 Actions). The star eater tears the light from the world in a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on it. The area around the star eater becomes darkness, and while the star eater resides inside of it, it is considered invisible.

Crushing Grasp (Costs 2 Actions). The star eater looks towards a creature it can see within 120 feet of it, outstretching a hand and grasping the air in front of it. The target must succeed on a DC 27 Wisdom saving throw or take 27 (5d10) force damage.
