Oath of Arcana

The Oath of Arcana dates back to when the high magics of the Weave were lost, and when the holders of this oath stood against the chaos that followed in its wake. Paladins who swear this oath vow to stop anyone who might abuse the gift of the Weave, and seek to prevent the chaos that follows in the wake of those who overreach.

Holding a more direct connection to the Weave than a paladin might traditionally have, paladins of this oath wield arcane magics far beyond that of other oaths.

Tenets of the Arcane

No matter where or when the Oath of Arcane is sworn, its tenets are universal.

Safeguard the Weave Protect the weave from those who would abuse it, or oppress it.

The Wonder of Magic Magic is a wonderful gift, and one that should be cherished in whatever form it takes.

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed.

Channel Divinity

3rd-level Oath of Arcana feature

You gain the following two Channel Divinity options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.

Arcane Overcharge. You can use your Channel Divinity to invoke the Weave to strengthen your spells. Whenever you expend a spell slot, you can use your Channel Divinity to treat the spell slot as being one level higher than it currently is.

Insight of the Weave. You can use your Channel Divinity to grant you insights into the nature of the Weave. As a bonus action, you grant yourself a +10 bonus to Intelligence (Arcana) checks for the next 10 minutes.

Aura of Amplification

7th-level Oath of Arcana feature

You can use your connection to the weave to empower the magic around you. As a reaction to when a friendly creature within 10 feet of you casts a spell, you can expend a spell slot and add its level to the level of the spell being cast, up to a maximum total level of half your paladin level (rounded up).

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Absorb Arcana

15th-level Oath of Arcana feature

At 15th level, you can absorb the magic in spell cast at you, unraveling them. When you are targeted by a spell or within the area of a spell that is cast, you can use your reaction to make an Charisma check to attempt to unravel the spell. The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a success, the spell fails, has no effect, and you regain a spell slot equal to or lower than the level of the spell your absorbed.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier and regain all uses when you complete a long rest.

Aspect of Arcana

At 20th level, you can tap directly into the Weave itself, becoming a conduit for its might. As a bonus action, you gain the following benefits for 1 minute.

  • When you take the Attack action, you can cast one of your paladin spells with a casting time of 1 action in place of one of those attacks.
  • Whenever you expend a spell slot, you can treat the spell slot as being 1 level higher than what it is.
  • You have advantage on saving throws against spells and spell attacks against you have disadvantage.
