Lupin

Doglike People

Lupins are canine-like humanoids covered in fur that can be many different colors and patterns, with fairly large pointed or floppy ears, a muzzled face that ends in a cold, wet snout, and a tail that wags back and forth when the lupin is happy. Like their varied appearances, the adaptable lupin has a variety of lifestyles and can be found in nearly every environment.

Pack Members

Many lupins live in packs of family members, raising children as a unit. Within packs, a social structure based on the members' skills determines decision making and leadership, with one couple acting as joint leaders. When a lower-ranked lupin reaches maturity, they may choose to leave their pack in search of another pack and a partner, who they stay with for life. Other lupins live on their own or with a partner and children, surviving by hunting and gathering, and only choose to form packs when their survival is threatened. However, more and more lupins choose to live in cities as part of a nation.

Wide Variety

There are three variations of lupins:

The Scrappy lupins resemble foxes, coyotes, and other canids such as jackals, tanuki, and African wild dogs. They tend to be fairly solitary, only forming loose groups when necessary, with a few exceptions. However, they rarely act openly hostile toward other races, using trickery when threatened. Despite this, if they have no other option to defend themselves, they will fight fiercely. Though they are widespread, more Scrappy lupins live in warm climates.

The Wild lupins resemble wolves, and usually live in tight-knit, often nomadic packs. Despite their sometimes frightening appearance, with their large size and sharp claws and teeth, they almost never harm those who don't pose a threat, choosing to avoid them instead. It may be difficult to earn a Wild lupin's trust, as they tend to be somewhat shy towards strangers, but if you do, you have a formidable ally. Though they are widespread, more Wild lupins live in cold climates.

The Mongrel lupins resemble domestic dogs, and are a mix of lupin and other mammalian races, or the children of other Mongrel lupins or lupins of two different subraces. As a result, they have enormous variation in their appearances. However, the temperament of most Mongrel lupins is very similar: They tend to be optimists, open to new experiences, with a remarkable enthusiasm, and willing to make new friends, as they have an endearing tendency to see the best in others. They may be found among packs of Scrappy or Wild lupins; however, among the three types of lupins, the Mongrel is the best adapted to life among other races, and can be found everywhere with equal frequency.

Lupin Names

Lupins often have names signifying a connection to nature. In addition, lupin packs have names relating to a central tenet of the pack's lifestyle. However, many Mongrel lupins have names from their non-lupin ancestry, and even some Wild or Scrappy lupins that live in cities give their children names from other races.

Lupin Traits

Ability Score Increases: Your Constitution increases by 2.

Age: Lupins tend to age at a similar rate to humans, becoming adults in their late teens and living no more than a century. However, smaller lupins tend to live slightly longer than larger ones on average.

Alignment: Scrappy lupins, used to relying on themselves, tend to be chaotic, whereas Wild lupins tend toward lawful alignments as a result of their pack tendencies. Mongrel lupins are very often good aligned, and an evil Mongrel lupin is almost unheard of. As a general rule, larger Mongrel lupins tend to be more lawful and smaller Mongrels tend to be more chaotic; however, their non-lupin heritage also plays a role in their tendency towards lawful or chaotic.

Size: The smallest of the Scrappy and Mongrel lupins are 3 and a half feet, and the tallest of the Wild and Mongrel lupins are almost 7 feet tall. Lupins from colder areas also tend to be slightly larger than their warmer relatives. Depending on the Variations below, you are either Small or Medium.

Speed: Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision: You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages: You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.

Bite: Your sharp teeth and strong jaw provide a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with it, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
