Notes on Necromancy: Vol. 1
The following spells are additional necromancy spells for players to choose from, and are listed in order of spell level.
"... making it the ideal school of choice for any aspiring mage, I should think. Manipulating corpses is all well and good, of course, but the negative energy that permeates the air is so simple for even an apprentice to harness and control. My research into the topic was met by stiff opposition by Archmage Blukthal, to no one's surprise, but even he must release that my research is instrumental to the evolution of magic. Even Seraya agrees with me, and she's never cast a necromancy spell in her life. If he just understood you could apply the knowledge to other schools without practicing yourself..."
— SILTHUR VRAKMORN
Silthur's Sunder
2nd-level necromancy
- Class: Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: Self (30-foot line)
- Components: V, S, M (a piece of broken stone)
- Duration: Instantaneous
"If only my breath was as effective at destroying a door..."
You send out a blast of dark chaos energy in a line 30 feet long and 5 feet wide in a direction you choose. Each creature in the line must make a Constitution saving throw. A creature takes 2d4 necrotic damage and 2d4 force damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Any objects or structures in the path of the spell takes twice as much damage.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the necrotic and force damage each increase by 1d4 for each slot level above 2nd.
Silthur's Ravenous Flock
4th-level necromancy
- Class: Sorcerer, Wizard
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: 120 feet
- Components: V, S, M (three feathers plucked from a dead bird)
- Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
"Intelligent and vicious? I share far too much in common with a mere bird."
You create a 20-foot-radius sphere of undead, ravenous carrion crows centered on a point you choose within range, which last for the duration of the spell. The flock spreads around corners, and its area is lightly obscured.
When a creature enters the spell's area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, that creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. The creature takes 2d8 necrotic damage and 2d8 piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
At the start of each of your turns, you can move the flock up to 10 feet in any direction (no action required).
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the piercing damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 4th.
Silthur's Soul Tear
9th-level necromancy
- Class: Warlock, Wizard
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: 120 feet
- Components: V, S, M (an object worth at least 5000gp that can contain a humanoid soul, such as a specially crafted crystal)
- Duration: Instantanous
"Not especially ethical, but that's hardly stopped me before."
You attempt to rip the soul from a humanoid within range. That creature must make both a Constitution saving throw and a Charisma saving throw. If the creature succeeds both of its saving throws, the spell has no effect. If the creature fails either saving throw, but not both, it takes 20d10 force damage as you ravage its very soul. If the creature fails both saving throws, it dies, and its soul is stored inside of material component used in the casting of this spell. While the soul is stored this way, the dead humanoid it came from can't be revived.
If you are able to contain a soul inside of the material component used in this spell, that object can't be used again for the casting of this spell. Instead, you can release the soul when you cast any spell you know other than soul tear, using the humanoid soul as the material component for that casting of the spell, rather than the spells usual material component. After freeing the soul trapped this way, the object can be used again in the casting of this spell.
