Runes
At 3rd level, you can craft one rune of your choice. Crafting a rune requires you to have woodcarver's tools on your person. Select one of the below runes to craft, during a long rest you may replace your chosen rune with a new option from this list:
Idol of the Cosmos. You gain insight into the path of the stars and fate. As an action, you may consume a spell slot of 3rd level or lower. When your next turn begins, you may cast a spell you’ve prepared of the same slot level or lower as a free action until the end of your turn. If you don’t, you regain the spell slot at the end of the turn. After you cast a spell in this way, you can’t use this feature again until you finish a short or long rest.
Idol of Dread. Your understanding of fear and mortality are awakened. As an action, you can target one creature you can see within 60 feet of you. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or become frightened of you until the end of your next turn. Whether the creature succeeds or fails, it has disadvantage on the next saving throw it makes within the next minute. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Idol of Fury. This rune emboldens your fury. As a bonus action, your attack rolls and your save DCs are increased by 1 plus the number of magical items to which you’re currently attuned. This bonus last until the end of your next turn. Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Idol of the Hearth. Spirits of kinship and hearths run through your veins. As a reaction to when you see a friendly creature within 60 feet be damaged, you may restore one plus a number of d6s hit points to them. The number of d6s is equal to the number of magical items to which you’re currently attuned. A creature whose hit points are restored by this, may use their reaction to restore same number of d6s hit points to a creature with missing hit points within 60 feet of them. Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Idol of Insight. You can shift odds of any encounter by channeling insight of yore. As an action, you touch one willing creature, and on the next ability check, attack roll, or saving throw they add a d6 to the roll. If you are attuned to a magic item, you add +3 to the roll instead. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (a minimum of once), and regain all expended uses after a short or long rest.
Idol of Wandering. This rune imbues you with visions and tales of voyages, invigorating your movement. As a bonus action, until the end of your turn your movement speed triples. At the end of your movement, you can choose a number of creatures equal to your Intelligence modifier within 120 feet to teleport to any space adjacent to you. While you have this bonus, you have climbing and swimming speed equal to your current speed. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier, and regain all expended uses after a short or long rest.
Runic Focus
At 5th level, you craft a runic focus to channel your runes through. You can use the following objects as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells: a skull, a talking board, a tarokka deck, a totem, or a wooden idol. When you finish a long rest, you can use woodcarver’s tools to carve special cases with sigils for these foci.
When you use a rune while you hold your runic focus, you can expend a spell slot of 2nd level or higher to give a friendly creature within 30 feet the ability to use the rune ability you’ve currently chosen until the end of your next turn. Once a friendly creature uses a rune this way, they can’t do so again until they finish a long rest.
Scry the Runes
At 9th level, you see visions of the past, future, the spiritual, and the arcane when you use your runes. After you use a rune, roll a d6. You gain access to a bonus based on whether you rolled an even or an odd number on the die:
- Weal (even). You gain access to another rune for the next minute. Using this rune doesn’t activate your Scry the Runes feature.
- Woe (odd). You regain an expended spell slot equal to half the result of the d6, rounded up. If you have no expended spell slots, you gain temporary hit points equal to the result of the d6 plus a d6 for each magic item to which you’re currently attuned.
Runic Ascension
At 15th level, you’ve unlocked the secrets of the runes. As an action, you can regain all uses of your chosen rune. Once you do this, you enter a trance becoming incapacitated and reducing your speed to zero until the start of your next turn. While in this trance, you have advantage on all saving throws. Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
