Blackrazor

Blackrazor was the first of a series of weapons forged by the Raven Queen in the Shadowfell. While the blade itself believes its purpose is to claim souls, many believe the Raven Queen intentionally places it along with its brethren in places mortals will find to further her own unscrupulous goals.

Personality

Blackrazor is cold and nihilistic. It was created to consume souls, and all humanoids as a mean to that end. The sword believes that all matter and energy sprang from a void of negative energy and will one day return to it, and it is designed to quicken that process. When speaking to a wielder, Blackrazor speaks with an imperious tone, as it is accustomed to being obeyed.

Statistics

Blackrazor is a neutral evil sentient longsword with an Intelligence score of 15, a Wisdom score of 11, and a Charisma score of 16. It knows the Shadar-Kai language, and has proficiency in the Arcana skill.

Properties

Blackrazor begins with the Blackrazor's Curse and Bonus Spells properties. It gains the Supplant Soul ability at 6th level, the Armor of Hexes ability at 10th level, and the Soul Plague ability at 14th level.

Bonus Spells

While you hold Blackrazor, you can use it as a spellcasting focus. While you do, the following spells are added to your Warlock spells known, provided you are of the prerequisite Warlock level.

Level Bonus Spell
1st Compelled Duel
3rd Blindness/Deafness
5th Blink
7th Staggering Smite
9th Cone of Cold

Blackrazor's Curse

Blackrazor can mark a creature for death by placing a baleful curse on them. As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target is cursed for 1 minute. The curse ends early if the target dies, you die, or you are incapacitated. Until the curse ends, you gain the following benefits:

  • You gain a bonus to damage rolls against the cursed target equal to Blackrazor's Attunement Bonus.
  • If the cursed target dies, you consume its soul, regaining hit points equal to your warlock level + your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1 hit point).

You can't use this feature again until you finish a short or long rest.

Supplant Soul

Blackrazor can possess the corpses of people that fall before it by consuming and replacing their soul. When you slay a humanoid using Blackrazor, you can make Blackrazor's sentience enter its corpse, becoming a ghoul. When the ghoul appears, it gains temporary hit points equal to half your warlock level. Roll initiative for the ghoul, which has its own turns.

The ghoul's mental ability scores are replaced by Blackrazor's, it can speak the languages Blackrazor knows, and it has access to Blackrazor's trained skills. It has a special bonus to its attack rolls equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of +0). It gains the bonus to damage rolls from Blackrazor's Curse against marked targets.

The ghoul remains animate until the end of your next long rest, at which point Blackrazor returns to the sword.

You can still use Blackrazor's other features while its sentience is in inhabiting a ghoul.

Once you create a ghoul with this feature, you can't use the feature again until you finish a long rest.

Hexbound Duelist

Blackrazor's curse digs into the creature's mind, giving you foresight over its actions. If a creature cursed by Blackrazor's Curse hits you with an attack roll, you can use your reaction to roll a d6. On a 4 or higher, the attack instead misses you, regardless of the roll.

Soul Plague

When creatures affected by Blackrazor's Curse dies, they explode with necromantic energy, spreading the curse like an infection. When a creature cursed by Blackrazor's Curse dies, you can apply the curse to each enemy within 10 feet of the target, provided you aren't incapacitated. When you apply the curse in this way, you don't regain hit points from the death of the previously cursed creature, as its soul explodes instead of being consumed.
