Dryadine - 5E Homebrew Race
by Nines
A Forest Uprooted
A race of former dryads who learned to detach themselves from their roots, these nomadic humanoids retain only bare traces of their previous magics. With no links remaining to their land and history, the Dryadine people roam the land, unbound to the Feywild and forests from whence they came. Some scholars claim they seek a new purpose, but the Dryadine claim that their nomadic life is their new purpose.
Dryadine Traits
Forest's Stride
You can pass through nonmagical plants without being slowed or damaged. In addition, you moving through nonmagical difficult terrain costs no extra movement.
Languages
You can read, write, and speak Common and Sylvan.
Ability Score Increase
You gain +2 to Consitution, reflecting the hardy nature of Dryads, and +1 to Charisma, reflecting their ethereal nature. If you are using Tasha's flexible ASI rules, these can go into any stat of your choice, as long as they don't overlap.
Bonus Proficiencies
Your connection with nature grants you an innate understanding of the natural world. You gain proficiency in Nature and Survival.
If you're playing with flexible proficiencies, you may swap these for any other skill.
Fey Ancestry
You have advantage on saving throws against being Charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Dryadic Legacy
Though your ties to the forest have been severed, you retain the magic of your ancestors. You know the Druidcraft cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you learn the Entangle spell and can cast it once as a 2nd-level spell. Once you reach 5th level, you learn and can also cast the Barkskin spell once. You must finish a long rest to cast these spells again with this trait. Your spellcasting ability for these spells is your choice of Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma.
Magical Nature
Your magical nature affords you some resistance to harmful magics. Once per day, if you fail a saving throw against a spell or magical effect, you may choose to reroll it. You must keep the second result.
Fire Sensitivity
While most living creatures don't like being set on fire, Dryadines are particularly susceptible to fire damage. Whenever you take fire damage, take an additional die of fire damage.
Closing Notes
- This race is also playable on DnDBeyond here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/620931-dryadine
- If it means anything, Detect Balance scores this as roughly 27, assuming Fire Sensitivity and Magical Nature roughly cancel out as intended.
- With the new Feywild UA out, I figured this was as good a time as any to bring this out. Many similar qualities to Dryads, but toned down for both lore and balance.
