The Fairie Race for DnD 5e

Race Background

  • The Feywild is home to many fantastic peoples, including fairies.
  • The great cities and kingdoms of the Fairies are spread throughout the far reaches of the Feywild, constantly vying for dominance and control.
  • The unlucky dweller of the material plane who finds themselves stumbling through a magical circle into a Fairie kingdom are tried in the Faerie courts. Reports of this experience are few and far between, yet tales of the cruelness and nefarious behaviour the Fairies use in extracting confessions is told throughout the land.

Fairie Ideals

  • In contrary to some of the stories Fairies are a mostly peaceful race, only demeaning themselves to violence in the most distasteful of situations, preferring to negotiate conflicts with games of chance, wit and skill.
  • They are a mischievous and dexterous race of beings who are blessed by the innate magic of the fey itself and as such show a tendency towards sporadic irrational behaviour.
  • They believe in the binding power of contracts and will follow them exactly, in word if not in spirit. Be wary when entering a contract with the Fairies as they are unlikely to accept one unless it benefits them greatly and can twist your wording to cause great chaos.

Physiology

  • Fairies can have several defining characteristics thought to be brought about by the adaptive and random nature of the energies of the Feywild.
  • As they mature Fairies will have a random feature added to their appearance which is often used to identify different Fairies. These features do not appear to be genetic.

Fairie Traits

You have the following racial traits:

Creature Type: Fey. You count as Fey for the use of spells or abilities that vary based on creature type.

Size. Your are small, with Fairie heights ranging from 2-3 feet (2.0 + 0.(1d10))ft.

Age. Fairies slowly reach maturity at 40 years old. After which time are ageless within the feywild. In other planes, without the magic of the Fey to sustain them, they age similarly to elves, commonly exceeding 800 years although many will return to the Feywild before this time.

Modifiers. You gain a +2 and a +1 to two separate stats of your choice.

Aligment. Fairie alignments are primarily chaotic neutral, seeking mostly personal gain, although some have been known to stray towards evil or good. The ruling classes of Fairies and those that preside in the Fairie courts have a more lawful nature.

Speed. You have a walking speed of 30ft.

(Optional) Fey Blood. You can add your proficiency bonus to any saving throw made to avoid or end the effects of being Charmed or being put to sleep by magic, if you do not already do so.

Fairie Flight. You have a flying speed equal to your walking speed and can hover. This flight is magical and does not require the use of your wings (if you have them).

Iron Irritation. The touch of Iron is irritating to you and causes rashes to form on your skin. You do not gain proficiency bonuses for attacks made with weapons of Iron or Steel. You are also unable to wear any armour made of Iron or Steel. The fairy kingdoms replace conventional Iron or Steel objects with Bronze.

Fairie Dust. You have the ability to produce Fairie dust, the effect of which is as described below. Your spellcasting ability for these spells is your choice of Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma.

Fairie Dust

You produce a magical dust from your body that can be used to create the following effects:

  • Faerie Flame. As an action you can throw a handful of dust at a location within 30ft. This creates a 10ft radius sphere inside which is under the effects of the Faerie Fire spell for 30 seconds. A creature can escape this effect if it succeeds on a DC(8 + prof + spellcasting ability) Dexterity saving throw.

  • Levitating Touch. As an action you can sprinkle a handful of dust on an object or creature within 5ft of you and cause it to undergo the effects of the levitate spell for 1 minute, except it hovers 5ft above the ground and has to be physically moved up or down. An unwilling creature may make a DC(8 + prof + spellcasting ability) Strength saving throw to resist this effect and may repeat this saving throw every turn.

  • Mesmerising Breath. As an action you blow a handful of dust into the face of a creature within 5ft of you. The creature has a strong urge assist you, giving you and your allies advantage on charisma checks targeting that creature for a minute. When this effect ends the creature immediately notices it was charmed by you and is likely to become hostile.

  • Shrinking Shower. As an action you pour a handful of dust onto yourself or one object within 5ft, the object and you undergo the reduction effect of the spell Enlarge/Reduce and if used on yourself this is twice as effective (quarters dimensions). The effect lasts for 1 minute on you and the item, but if you are holding or wearing the item you can sustain this effect for up to 8 hours. If it leaves your hand or body it regains normal size in 1 minute.

  • (Optional) Disorientating Burst. As a bonus action you can quickly throw a handful of dust around yourself in dazzling array, momentarily distracting those around you. This gives you the effect of the disengage action.

You can produce a number of handfuls of Fairie Dust equal to your proficiency bonus every long rest. As long as you have 1 or more handfuls remaining you can cause them to glow as if under the effect of the Light cantrip, but in a 5ft radius.
