Cleric Divine Domain

Atheist Domain

An acolyte in a monastery studies the holy texts and histories, only to come to the conclusion that it does not make sense to them. They can see inconsistencies with their religion that the senior monks do not acknowledge, that cannot be explained away by blind faith. With that single moment of realisation, they take the first step down upon a very different theological path.

The Atheist Domain is a strange, perhaps paradoxical, domain. Clerics of Atheism are non-believers - many of whom often wouldn’t even consider themselves to be true clerics at all. Some are priests who have grown disillusioned by their religion, others are philosophers who seek to question ‘what is divinity?’

They do not serve any gods above, but rather they are followers of scepticism and logic. To be an atheist is to question and challenge.

Even if the gods do exist, these clerics certainly do not worship them. Nevertheless, Clerics of Atheism are capable of channeling their own brand of divine magic.

No one is quite sure where or how these clerics draw their power, and it is a subject of much debate. Some theorise that Clerics of Atheism access a higher plane of non-belief – perhaps there is some sort of nameless deity formed by the belief of those who do not believe? Others disregard that notion entirely, and instead claim that Atheist Clerics can build their own divinity from inside of themselves. They do not rely on any higher power, instead they harness the divine magic from within.

There are many such contradictory theories and propositions, and many debates over the subject. In fact, arguing with others is practically a form of ceremony for Atheist Clerics.

Bonus Proficiencies

1st level Atheist Domain feature

You become proficient in your choice of two of the following skills: Investigation, History or Religion. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for ability checks you make using those skills.

Practiced Articulator

1st level Atheist Domain feature

You have experience debating the most complex of topics. You may choose to apply your Wisdom modifier rather than your Charisma modifier to Persuasion or Deception ability checks.

Channel Divinity: Reasonable Discourse

2nd level Atheist Domain feature

You can use your Channel Divinity to make a creature stop and question itself.

As an action, you target one creature that can hear you and ask a question of it (for example, you could ask ‘Why are you attacking us?’ or ‘What are you doing here?’). The target you must make an Intelligence saving throw. If it fails the saving throw, the target becomes suddenly unsure about the answer to your question and it is drawn into discussing the matter with you. The target may remain hostile to you, but so long as this effect is active the target will be willing to engage in conversation and cannot make any attack rolls against you or your companions.

This effect lasts for a duration of 10 minutes, or until conversation is interrupted, or until you or your companions do anything harmful against it.

Creatures with an Intelligence of 3 or lower or creatures that do not understand your language are unaffected. When the effect ends, the target is not immediately aware that its behaviour has been influenced by you.

Channel Divinity: Mental Dissertation

6th level Atheist Domain feature

You can use your Channel Divinity to reinforce an ally’s perceptions against illusions and bias.

As an action, you can touch one creature. For a duration of one hour, the target is immune to being Charmed, and they automatically succeed on saving throws against illusion spells. They can see through any illusionary effects; invisible creatures become visible to them, and they can observe the true form of any magically-disguised creatures.

For the duration, the target also has advantage on any Wisdom or Intelligence checks or saving throws.

Potent Spellcasting

8th level Atheist Domain feature

You can add your Wisdom modifier to the damage you deal with any cleric cantrip.

Bastion of Logic

17th level Atheist Domain feature

Your presence of mind is impeccable, capable of strengthening those around you. You add the spell Mind Blank to your list of domain spells. Like other domains spells, this spell is always prepared and counts as a cleric spell for you.

You can also cast the spell Mind Blank once without expending a spell slot. You must finish a long rest before you can do so again.
