Kalashtar (Zaekata)

By @homebrewlesbian

After the planet of dreams and nightmares was shattered, its denizens, aberrations and Quori, were scattered through deep space. Kalashtar are plane-touched individuals, influenced by the far realm's stranded dreams and nightmares.

Each Kalashtar is connected to a Quori, a spirit of a dream or nightmare, that occupies their mind each night when they sleep. Some Quori who do not conform to the realm of their dreams find themselves untethered from their spirit, and never again able to experience a restful night.

Star Spirits

The relationship between a Kalashtar and their Quori is entirely unique. Some interact through vague intention in the dreamscape, while others directly speak and influence the Kalashtar. Kalashtar are even occasionally known appear in the dreams of another Kalashtar, even if they've never met before.

Work together with the DM to determine the nature of your linked spirit. Typically, a kalashtar knows the name and nature of their spirit, but some may know nothing of their spirit or the source of their psychic gifts, such as an orphan kalashtar raised among strangers.

Racial Traits

All Kalashtar possess the following traits:

Ability Score Increase. You can increase your Wisdom, Charisma, and Intelligence scores by 1.

Size. Kalashtar can be born of non-planetouched race (such as elves, dwarves, humans, and halflings). Their size is Medium or Small.

Speed. Your speed is 30 ft. if your size is Medium and 25 ft. if your size is small.

Age. Kalashtar live the same duration of the race they were born.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common & Quori.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light.

Mental Discipline. You have resistance to psychic damage.

Subclasses Select one of the following subraces: The Dreaming, in tune with their spirit, or the Severed, cut off from the dreaming world.

Dreaming

Dreaming Kalashtar are linked to a distant spirit, deep in space.

Dreamshaped. During a long rest, a Kalashtar walks within their Quori's dreamscape. As such, you are immune to spells and other magical effects that require you to dream, like Dream, but not to spells and other magical effects that put you to sleep, like sleep. In addition, your Quori grants you one of the following benefits:

  • When you finish a long rest, roll a d20 and record the number rolled. You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check you or a creature you can see within 30 ft of you makes as a reaction. You must choose to do so before the roll. The roll is then expended and lost when you begin your next long rest.

  • During your dream, you may ask your Quori a question that can be answered with a yes or no. Your spirit will give you a truthful answer to the extent of their otherworldly knowledge.

Mind Link. You can speak telepathically to any creature you can see, provided the creature is within a number of feet of you equal to 10 times your level. You don't need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language.

When you're using this trait to speak telepathically to a creature, you can use your action to give that creature the ability to speak telepathically with you for 1 hour or until you end this effect as an action. To use this ability, the creature must be able to see you and must be within this trait's range. You can give this ability to only one creature at a time; giving it to a creature takes it away from another creature who has it.

Severed

Severed Kalashtar have been cut off from their Quori, disavowed for their noncompliance.

Hardened Mind. You have advantage on all Wisdom saving throws and cannot be frightened.

Dreamless. You cannot naturally fall asleep. You can finish a long rest in 6 hours if you spend those hours in an inactive, motionless state, during which you retain consciousness. You can, however, still be compelled to sleep by spells such as Sleep and other magical effects. When forced to sleep, it is restless and filled with horrid visions of the Far Realm.

Feats

The following feats are available to Kalashtar:

Starsoul

You reflect the star-like qualities of your Quori and can use an action to unleash the brilliance that lives in you. You emit bright light in a 15 ft. radius, forcing anyone within the light to make a Constitution Saving Throw. On a failed save, they are Blinded until the end of your next turn. When you take damage, as a reaction, you can burst with starlight, causing creatures within 15. ft to take radiant damage equal to your level.

This transformation lasts for up to one minute or until you choose to end it (no action required). You regain the ability to transform after a long rest.

Voidsoul

You call upon the terrible power of aberrant nightmares and can use an action to transform into a sinister, form wreathed in black energy. You emit magical darkness in a 15 ft. radius, forcing creatures within that darkness to make a Wisdom Saving Throw. On a failed save, they are Frightened until the end of your next turn. While in this state, you can take a special action with the aberrant energy shrouding your form. As an action you make lash out to a creature within 15 ft of you, making a single attack roll using your Wisdom modifier (you are considered proficient with this attack), on a hit, the creature takes necrotic damage equal to 1d8 + your Wisdom modifier.

This transformation lasts for up to one minute or until you choose to end it (no action required). You regain the ability to transform after a long rest.

Author's Note

This is a slightly tweaked and reflavored variant of Ebberon's Kalashtar, made to fit the flavor of my homebrew setting. As such, some things are a bit different in terms of balance. I particularly wanted to explore a niche that I haven't seen in 5e so far, which is a plane-touched connected to aberrations or the far realm, which paired perfectly with Kalashtar as a starting point. This is rather indulgent and I'd air on the side of caution, particularly with the feats.
