Druid Subclass

Circle of Anthropology

While many druids have a kinship and connection to the forests and the creatures that dwell within, some druids are more connected to the lives and pursuits of the humanoid races.

These druids dedicate themselves to the study of the different vocations and activities undertaken by humanoids and can change their shape to reflect this study. A druid of this circle can be a formidable opponent, useful ally, or entertaining guest as a party. Some may even be Awakened animals.

Humanoid Wild Shape

Your weird obsession with humanoid studies have granted you the ability to transform into humanoid forms.

Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Wild Shape to transform into a medium humanoid NPC that you have seen with a challenge rating as high as 1. The rules on page 67 of the PHB for standard Wild Shape still apply with the following variations:

  • You may only change into the humanoid NPCs found in the Monster Manual and Volo's Guide to Monsters, or the current adventure module (pending DM approval).
  • You cannot transform into a specific NPC with this feature, only a generic form.
  • Your weapons transform into the shape of weapons wielded by the new form and you gain proficiency in them whle transformed.
  • You do not gain proficiency in the languages spoken by the new form, but you do retain your own.
  • If the new form has the spellcasting feature, you may cast its prepared spells with the NPCs' spell slots. Concentration rules still apply.

Starting at 6th level, you can transform into a humanoid with a challenge rating as high as your druid level divided by 3, rounded down.

Combat Wild Shape

When you choose this circle at 2nd level, you gain the ability to use Wild Shape on your turn as a bonus action, rather than as an action. Additionally, while you are transformed by Wild Shape. you can use a bonus action to expend one spell slot to regain ld8 hit points per level of the spell slot expended.

Civilized Strike

Starting at 6th level, your attacks in Wild Shape humanoid form count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.

Humanish Shape - Undead

Starting at 6th level, you have learned that most undead started as humanoids. You can now learn and transform into humanoid shaped undead with your Wild Shape Feature.

In addition, your attacks in humanoid form count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.

Improved Humanish Shape

Beginning at 10th level, you have figured out that giants are just really big humanoids.

You can expend two uses of Wild Shape at the same time to choose one of the following:

  • Transform into a Hill Giant for 1 minute, even if you have never observed one.
  • Transform into a known humanoid shape under the effects of the Enlarge/Reduce spell for the duration of the spell.

At 14th level you can choose a Stone Giant for your shape. At 19th level you may choose from the shape of a Fire, Cloud, or Frost Giant.

Mastery of Smalltalk

You have studied humanoid desires, motivations, and cultures to the point of mastery.

Starting at 14th level, while Wild Shaped you can cast Alter Self at will, but only to use the Change Appearance Option. Using this feature also grants you proficiency with languages written and spoken by the form.

Considerations around Wild Shape

Make sure you talk to your DM about starting humanoid shapes and how they foresee you gaining shapes.

  • What shapes do you know from your backstory?
  • How long does it take to learn a new shape?
  • Does learning a new shape require a living subject?
  • Are any shapes not allowed by your DM?
  • Are there any extra checks for using higher level spells in a Wild Shape? For example, how much does it take to convince a deity to grant you divine casting?
