Chaotic Alteration

4th level, Transmutation

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: 60 feet
  • Components: V, S, M (an uncut gem worth 100 gold, which is consumed by the spell)
  • Duration: Instantaneous

You choose a non-magical object that is Huge or smaller in size that isn’t being worn or carried. When changing the object's shape, you can choose whether the object will be Volatile or Stable.

Volatile. The object is changed into pure, destructive energy. You must make an Intelligence check to alter the object. The DC varies on the object’s size:

Object Size Damage Dice Damage Radius Intelligence Check DC
Tiny 1d4 + 1 5 ft. radius DC 5
Small 2d6 + 2 10 ft. radius DC 10
Medium 3d8 + 3 15 ft. radius DC 15
Large 4d10 + 4 20 ft. radius DC 20
Huge 5d12 + 5 30 ft. radius DC 25

On a successful check, each creature within the radius of the object's blast must make a Dexterity saving throw or take one of the following types of damage (your choice): acid, cold, fire, lightning, poison, or thunder damage. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage.

On a failed check, the caster must make a Constitution saving throw with the same DC. On a successful save, you are unaffected the spell fails. On a failed save, the spell fails and you are infected by Chaos Phage.

Stable. The object changes into a different material entirely. The object can be no larger than 3 feet in any dimension and you must make an Intelligence check to alter the object. The DC varies on the material:

Material Intelligence Check DC
Vegetable Matter DC 5
Stone or Crystal DC 10
Precious Metals DC 15
Gems DC 20
Adamantine or Mithral DC 25

On a successful check, the object changes to the chosen material. On a failed check, you must make a Constitution saving throw with the same DC. On a successful save, you are unaffected and the spell fails. On a failed save, the spell fails and you are infected by Chaos Phage.

Chaos Phage. While infected with this disease, the creature can’t regain hit points, and its hit point maximum is reduced by 11 (3d6) every 24 hours. If the disease reduces your maximum hit points to 0, you instantly transform into a green slaad.

The transformation can't be reversed by anything short of a wish spell.
