## Scribiri Seekers of knowledge and keepers of lore, the scribiri dwell in vast libraries and decrepit scriptoriums. These small humanoid creatures vaguely resemble gnomes, but have skin that looks and feels like yellowed parchment. They are also completely bald, although some have esoteric runes where facial hair would be. The scribiri have spread far and wide in the search for secrets yet inearthed. ### Born of the Machine Ancient legends tell of an arrogant archmage who wished for a machine that could create knowledge. The wizard was overjoyed by the machine's creations, but in his hubris treated the newly created scribiri as little more than objects that could further his goals. What he did not realize was that the scribiri were no normal constructs; they were highly intelligent, self-replicating creatures. The different versions of the tale differ on how exactly the wizard died, but in every version his death is caused by his own creations, the scribiri. ### Innate Lore Each scribir is born with an innate piece of lore that they fully know and understand from birth. The piece of lore can range from a sentence to a paragraph in length, and it is always something that no other living mortal knows of at the time of the scribir's birth. The knowledge can be nearly anything, from the location of a fortress now buried to the exact contents of a long-dead mage's demiplane. It could even be knowledge that no mortal has ever known, such as the date of birth of a future king or a particular demon's true name. Whatever the piece of knowledge, a scribir is loath to divulge its secret to anyone that is not a close friend or part of its immediate family, especially if it believes the information is important. ### Knowledge Incarnate Every scribir contains a Tome at the core of their being. This Tome has both the scribir's innate knowledge and its important discoveries and experiences contained in writing within it. While normal creatures sustain themselves with material food, scribiri literally feed on knowledge and experience. Throughout the day, a scribir's experiences will appear on their skin in writing, starting from the legs and moving upward. When the scribir rests, the runes slowly disappear. The knowledge and experiences most important to the scribir become additions to the Tome, while the rest are consumed. A scribir survives by continually learning and experiencing new things. This is often why a scribir will take up the life of adventuring, for a bored scribir is a hungry scribir. Scribiri that are forced into a continuous routine, such as those imprisoned, usually die within a year. \columnbreak ### The Libremueres When a scribir dies, its body crumbles to dust, leaving only its Tome. These Tomes are usually collected and placed within special libraries called Libremueres. These places are sacred to the scribiri, and outsiders are seldom within. Scribiri themselves are only allowed to read a Tome with permission of the particular deceased's family. Rarely, the Tome of a renowned scribir, such as a successful adventurer or great leader, may be put on public display. However, Tomes such as these are always monitered, for it is a great taboo among scribiri for one to copy a Tome. ### Scribiri Names Scribiri are often named after something that is related to their innate piece of lore. A scribir's last name is always his grandfather's first name. ### Scribiri Traits Your scribiri character has several inborn traits, the result of living within a society devoted to knowledge. ***Ability Score Increase.*** Your Intelligence increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1. ***Age.*** Scribiri mature at the same rate humans do and, unless they are killed, live for exactly 77 years, for this is when the last page of their Tome is filled. ***Alignment.*** Most scribiri have a lawful bend to them, and few tomes are evil. ***Size.*** Scribiri are between 3 and 5 feet tall.
