Dragon Domain

The might of the dragon gods has long been greatly renowned throughout the hallowed halls of the pious. With their blessings, devout followers can gain control over elements rivaled only by true dragons and their kin. Almost any draconic deity (Bahamut, Tiamat, Io, etc) can find Dragon clerics among the number of their worshipers.

In the realm of Midgard, where the standard dragon gods have been ousted from their seat of power, only Aelon can give his worshipers the power to draw divine strength from the Prismatic Well, the true source of all draconic power.

At each indicated cleric level, you add the listed spells to your spells prepared.

Cleric Level Spells
1st identify, chromatic orb
3rd dragon's breath, alter self
5th protection from energy, fear
7th elemental bane, Leomund's secret chest
9th hold monster, reincarnate

When a Dragon Domain cleric casts reincarnate, the target of the spell is always reincarnated as a Dragonborn.

Draconic Manifestation

1st-level Dragon Domain feature

At 1st level, you choose the manner in which the power of your god infuses you; dragons are known for both their might and magical prowess. Choose one of the following specializations. This choice is permanent, and determines the ability you gain at Level 8.

Draconic Might. You gain proficiency in heavy armor, and martial weapons. At Level 8, you gain the Divine Strike ability.

Draconic Potency. You learn one cantrip from the sorcerer spell list. It is a cleric spell for you. At Level 8, you gain the Potent Spellcasting ability.

Additionally, both choices gain proficiency in the Draconic language, and count as Dragonborn for the purposes of choosing feats and using magic items.

Draconic Aspect

1st-level Dragon Domain feature

Also at 1st level, when you complete a long rest, you can choose one damage type, choosing from acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison. You gain Resistance to that damage type. This lasts until you choose a different damage type with this feature.

Channel Divinity: Dragon Breath

2nd-level Dragon Domain feature

At 2nd level, as an action, you can present your holy symbol and channel the draconic might of your gods into a destructive exhalation of energy. Your Draconic Aspect feature determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. (Fire chooses line or cone when activating this ability.)

When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by the damage type of the attack. A creature takes 2d6 + your cleric level damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one.

If your race has a natural breath weapon, you may choose to use the damage, saves, and shapes given by this feature in place of your natural ones.

This Channel Divinity option deals more damage as you gain levels in the cleric class. Your Dragon Breath's damage increases to 3d6 when you reach 5th level, 4d6 when you reach 8th level, 5d6 when you reach 11th level, 6d6 when you reach 14th level, 7d6 when you reach 17th level, and 8d6 when you reach 20th level.

Damage Type Save Shape
Fire (Line) DEX 5ft by 30ft Line
Fire (Cone) DEX 20ft Cone
Acid DEX 5ft by 30ft Line
Lightning DEX 5ft by 30ft Line
Poison CON 20ft Cone
Cold CON 20ft Cone

Channel Divinity: Draconic Presence

6th-level Dragon Domain feature

Starting from 6th level, you can use your Channel Divinity to exude a terrifying presence. As an action, you force each creature of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of you to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature becomes frightened of you for 1 minute. The frightened creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Dragon Domain?

Sure, why not? Throughout multiple past editions of Dungeons & Dragons, there has been a domain available for clerics who worship the divinity of the dragon gods. In 5e, no such subclass seems to be forthcoming, so I made one of my own to suit any number of PCs or NPCs in my setting who worship Aelon, the dragon-god who usurped the seat atop the draconic pantheon.

Greater Draconic Manifestation

8th-level Dragon Domain feature

At Level 8, your connection to the physical might or magical prowess of the Dragon Gods increases in power, and you gain one of the following benefits, based on your specialization.

Divine Strike. You gain the ability to infuse your weapon strikes with divine energy. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can cause the attack to deal an extra 1d8 of the damage type determined by your Draconic Aspect feature. When you reach 14th level, the extra damage increases to 2d8.

Potent Spellcasting. You add your Wisdom modifier to the damage you deal with any cleric cantrip. Additionally, your spells and Dragon Breath ability ignore Damage Resistances of the damage type determined by your Draconic Aspect feature.

Heart of the Dragon

17th-level Dragon Domain feature

At 17th level, your devotion to the Dragon Gods have given you great power, available to you at your command.

You can use your bonus action to take on a draconic aspect that lasts for 1 minute. For the duration of this ability, you gain advantage on saving throws against magic, the Resistance granted by your Draconic Aspect feature instead becomes Immunity, and you gain a fly speed of 90 feet. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
