Domains

Domains are landmasses of different sizes. Each domain has a governing official residing in their assigned locations. Domains used in Howlrun are: Kingdom, Duchies, Counties, Baronies, and Settlements.

Kingdom

In the world of Howlrun the land has been divided into 7 continents known as Kingdoms. These Kingdoms are governed by a King (Queen) responsible for the safety of all its citizens and upholding the economy.

A Kingdom has multiple factions and environments to create a diverse habitat. Living in a realm for 5 years will gain the knowledge of notable NPCs in the realm. King (Queen) will appoint their delegate Duke (Duchess) for leading their provinces. (These positions can be filled by PCs)

Duchy

Each Duchy is appointed with a Duke (Duchess) directly or through an electoral process. A minimum 3 Duchies per Kingdom. A duchy can create their own set of duchy laws however these laws must be approved by the King (Queen). Refusal to get approval interferes with the pledge to the realm and will causes internal conflict. If the majority of the duchies go against the Realm it will fall into a state of neglect until a new King (Queen) is throned.

Living in duchy for 5 years will earn you the history of the land and any present activity within it's borders with the notable NPCs. Learn history and aid solve quests faster.

County

Often times, Counties tend focus on their own territory, usually a lucrative resource or a strong military presence in which the Duke (Duchess) has appointed a Count (Countess) to overlook production and protect its assets.

Players with renown in a County have grown to be a local hero. To achieve this you would have to had carried out quests or assignments to aid this domain in their successes. To win the heart of a County. This is paramount if you plan to conquer a Province or sway their influence to your favor.

Players who remain in a county for 5 years will earn knowledge of the local maps. These are useful for dungeons and locating landmarks. Learn the notable NPCs in domain.

Barony

Baronies generally consists of a settlement and its surrounding biomes. Count or Countess appoints a Baron (Baroness) to govern it's land. These Barony borders are shown on the map with black borders. A Baron will typically reside in the settlement within it's Barony claiming the Master suite in the Noble House.

Originating or spending 5 years in a Barony region gives you reputation with a crowd of your choice, thus allowing you to join a faction without walking through recruiting.

Settlements

The smallest domain are the Settlements which are managed by Reeves. One representative from each Kingdom faction resides in a settlement for recruiting or gathering intelligence for their organization. The Reeve in charge of the settlement determines the type of hamlet. town, or city it will become. The type of town will dictate the faction presence. Reeve dwells in a Master suite in the Noble House, if occupied by Baron the Reeve stays in the Guest suite.

Players who remain in a settlement for 5 years will have more information on the location which could benefit the member or the party as they progress through the campaign. Able to know the local organizations in the area.

Biomes

These are vacant landscapes. Tundras, Grasslands, Mountains, Valleys, Swamps, Lakes, etc. These lands typically claimed by the Baron or Baroness in which the area is located in. No officials generally observe these regions on a daily basis, becoming a primary location for a hostile group. If venturing into these areas, proceed with caution. Until these locations have a stronghold with a faction they are unable to provide any support to the Kingdom's warfare.

Part 1 | Campaign Introduction

Administration Roles

Game Masters (GM)

Game Masters are fundamental as they grease the cogs and ensure the game is being monitored and run smoothly. They track the progress of others and give them feats of accomplishments or perils when gone astray for too long. In theory, the GMs keep the game feeling alive!

This role is extremely trusted as you set the bar. If you cheat the system players may never found out - however if they do discover you cut corners, it

Campaign Developers (CD)

Developers in our Community are the writers! Whether Dungeon Master Handouts or Structure Handouts like this one, a CD has sat in and edited changes. If edit changes are requested by a Player and approved in the next Developer Meeting then those changes will be actioned and the Player who suggested the change will be notified of the outcome. (This also means Player will be notified if declined.)

Want to join the Developers team? Sent a message to one of the Developers to get you name entered into the Developer channel. We ask you give the Developers a week to make a decision. They may even ask if you could draft something as reference to make a final decision.

Anything red text in handouts are indications that the content is missing or not discussed in detail, however the this red flag sets a reminder that we would like to go back and draft more on the subject. Until then, please be patient with the Developers. At the start of a campaign it can be extremely exhausting filling in the particulars to a 'new' world.

Dungeon Master (DM)

Dungeon Masters are ones who run session nights. They enjoy the camaraderie of having a group thwarting evil together. Dungeon Masters make decisions on the fly when there is no reference to script. (Which can be more oft than not). They do not get thrown completely to the wolves however... The Moderators will do their best to provide Handouts for different sections of the world.

We are consistently looking for people to help run our campaign. That said, we do not want our reputation to drop, so we do have to carry out a background check and guage your experience level. We only want the best experiences for our players - and if you feel you can help raise that excitement please dont hesitate to reach out on Discord to Dungeon Master.

Discord Administrators (DA)

Discord Administrators aid the team in taking care of our Discord channels. Its been known in the past that communities fall apart to drama which broadcasts among the channels. Discord Administrators are in place with the focus of keeping peace and entertainment alive in our community.

We are looking for folks that are direct, yet polite. Most times you can tell someone they are being inappropriate without making them feel humiliated or insulted. Social butterflies with a good sense of what should and should not be discussed in open forum are the ones we are after! If you'd like to become a member of the DA please reach out to a DA to get the ball rolling. Look forward to hearing from you!

Player (PC)

Those who have joined the campaign strictly to play without any other obligations. To begin with us as a Player speak to a Dungeon Master to see when the next available session takes place that you can join. In the meantime you can submit your character to a GM and begin roleplaying in our in-game channels.

If you have joined the campaign as a player and wish to transition to another Admin role, this can be done by speaking to one of the roles you wish to join upon.

Cautions on the Roles

.

If you are inactive as a GM you will be demoted to a PC status. (3 weeks inactive.) You can return to GM status upon your return (up to 3 returns)

Game Play!

Game Mechanics

The following are the months used in the calendar year.

First letter to each month follows the traditional calendar:

J - January, F - February, etc.

  2. Farn
  3. Mica
  4. Aprun
  5. Moka
  6. Jerto
  7. Juna
  8. Augi
  9. Semu
  10. Octra
  11. Nehru
  12. Daren

Similar to Forgotten Realms (D&D5e) there are ten days in a week and four weeks to a month.

Beginning the Gameplay

Our goal is to have our Developers build quests and stories while the Dungeon Masters (DMs) carry out the sessions.

Downtime Activities

Due to the vast homebrew options that are applied to the Downtime Activities this section has its very own handout to cover in length. Depending on the roles you choose above these Downtime Activities may be valuable to you.

How to join a session

In our Discord DMs will announce when they are available and which land they are willing to run a session in. This is all based on their availability. Players can play by post or run a 1-on-1 session with the DM to increase their realm status.

Want to join a Faction?

Faction registration is an in game function. DMs will not place you into a faction (unless it is NPC lead). If there is drama in a faction, it is on the faction leaders to address it. If it becomes a problem in Discord outside of the game then a DM will interfere. Upon character creation you an option to join a faction effective immediately. Once in the game you must be hired on through PC or NPC leads.

Become a part of the Staff Team?

The previous page described our administration roles and how you could find yourself on the team if you enjoy taking part in some of the projects behind the scene.

Game Play in Settlements

Our Nobles and select Locals are assigned to individuals as opposed to being played by the Dungeon Master of that session. Therefore, these members are considered unavailable until they are online. The Dungeon Master can make any reason as to why they are unable to be present (late, traveling, sleeping, etc.)

This type of gameplay makes it much slower to speak to quest givers and notable NPCs. It is at that point you can take care of some downtime activities or hit a tavern and roleplay with some others who may not be in your 5-man session team. Use the roleplay channels or voice channels and get to know some of the world while waiting on a response. (If in 48 hours the game is still delayed to no response from the Noble or Local then the DM can carry out actions of this character)

Roles

In this campaign you will have a Role, which is an additional feature based on out-of-game position you have chosen in the campaign. Read through each role and see which one interests you. (Abbreviations covered at back of this Guide)

  • Noble (Only CDs and DMs)
  • Local (PCs, DAs, DMs CDs or GMs)
  • Soldier (CDs, DMs, DAs, and PCs)
  • Commoner (CDs, DMs, DAs, and PCs)
  • Acolyte (CDs, DMs, DAs, and PCs)
  • Scholar (CDs, DMs, DAs, and PCs)

Noble

General Description

A role that calls upon leadership. Someone who is willing to look after their domain needs. If their lands are neglected the domain will begin to wither. (2 weeks where noble is inactive) If the domain falls into a state of neglect all residents within those borders suffer a cost

Nobles will have a council of faction leaders from other organizations within the same domain size as the governing noble. These faction leaders form as the Noble's council of Advisors. If the domain is neglected, faction leads simply work as recruiters for their organization.

A proper Noble governs the lands. Dictate laws. Lead the populace. All organizations must be sanctioned by their noble or face being outlawed in the domain. This role is designed for those who enjoy setting rules and building towns or, find a architect to construct your buildings. (Develop Maps) .

If you are a Campaign Developer (CD) you are a Noble position. As such, you are relied upon for the domain you are assigned to. (See the #project board in discord to learn which Developer is assigned to which domain) . Dungeon Masters (DM) will play the Nobles if they are NPCs or if the CD is unavailable to play the role in which they are assigned.

Noble Titles

Here is the breakdown of Noble titles within the world.

  • King or Queen governor of a Kingdom Domain.
  • Duke or Duchess governor of a Province Domain.
  • Count or Countess governor of a County Domain.
  • Baron or Baroness governor of a Barony Domain.
  • Reeve is a governor of a Settlement Domain.
  • Lesser Noble is a traveling representative of the crown.

A Noble's Perspective

If a Noble neglects their land, it becomes infested with monsters and outlaws and the higher domain Noble appoints a new person to recover the lands.

If a smaller domain (e.g. Settlement), within a larger neglected land (e.g. County) then that City or Town becomes a safe haven amidst a dangerous area. Security will have to be increased as the chances of attack are increased on its borders. As the Noble you are given a economy budget. See Downtime Activities. (GMs track Noble activity)

Glimpse at Domain Perks

If you manage to maintain a set value of residents in your domain all its residents are filled with high morale and receive a one boon for each long rest. These boons are covered later in this guide.

Local

A Local can be played by any member in our server. These townsfolk are generated by the writer on their 'local list' when submitting their domain. If you hear a party is entering a settlement and you want to participate, you can by speaking to the DM of that party and playing a local when they arrive. you may not belong in the party on the campaign but you can still contribute.

Selecting a Local - that NPC is now assigned to you for as long as you intend to keep using character. If players approach this local, and you have not informed DM you are unable to attend, showing you are offline, the DM will inform the party the character is busy running errands or unreachable and to check back in later (as to give you an opportunity to respond), or redirect to a play by post scenario. The Locals have up to 48 hours to respond if they have not notified DMs they are on holidays/rest with forecasted time. If unable to perform in 48hrs the DM takes on the action of that NPC. If DM was alerted you are not able to play local DM will take action on behalf of Local immediately.

If you are unable to respond as the local NPC three consecutive times the local is unassigned from you and returns to being a free agent. For every time you do answer the calling you will be rewarded. If the DM announces the party is entering a settlement and you are present for the session, it is up to the Players to engage or confront the local. If they do not confront you, congratulations you still earned a reward watching YouTube with the game in the background.

Local Perks

Playing out locals in a campaign does grant perks. For each session you play as a local for our players you will earn experience for all characters involved, players receive 50 experience per hour spent with a local, whereas the local also earns 50 gold for their characters. Locals use the "Howlrun Loot Generator" to determine the party's quest reward(s) upon return. Lastly, for participating as a local - the settlement you are in thrives that much more and earns more funding for their economical growth. Nobles will love this feature. (DMs track the amount of time Locals spend with the party.)
