Dusk Elf (elf subrace)
As the descendants of those who refused to take sides in the schism between Lolth’s followers and the rest of elvenkind, the dusk elves exiled themselves to remote, isolated refuges. Over the generations, this forgotten tribe learned to wield shadow as its ally, allowing its members to pass through darkness virtually unseen.
Inevitably, many dusk elves find their way into the Domains of Dread. They refrain from standing out whenever possible, and are slow to trust outsiders. As a general rule, dusk elves are monochromatic; their skin and hair being either pale as moonlight or dark as night.
Dusk Elves in Barovia
Very few dusk elves remain in the valley of Barovia. What was once a prosperous elven kingdom was overthrown long ago when the von Zarovich family conquered the land. Barovia's current darklord — the vampire Strahd von Zarovich — went on to massacre all dusk elf females in his realm as retaliation for the killing of a prospective consort.
Aside from travelers pulled in by the Mists, all dusk elves living in Barovia are male and several centuries old.
Dusk Elf Traits
Members of the dusk elf subrace gain the following additional traits:
Mask of Darkness. You can attempt to hide even when you are only obscured by dim light.
Shape Shadows. You know the minor illusion cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the invisibility spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to cast it when you finish a long rest.
Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
