# Hew ## The Destructive Axe *"Rust, brass, wood. It was scrap among the gold and jewels atop it. It was only the smell of magic that had us keep hold, and afterwards... Well, it proved itself."* Hew appears to be a Dwarfen battleaxe, with its name recorded in Davek across the centre of the blade. It's entirely covered in rust, barring the wood of its handle. The blade is squat and blocky, comprised of an isosceles triangle with a beveled arrow pointing towards the tip of the blade. The handle is curved, more like that of a woodaxe than a battleaxe, with a larger base to counter the weight of the blade. ## History ### Creation *"For the last time, I've had enough of those blasted Dryads and their tree hugging, or worse. I need wood for my forge, and by Moradin I'll have it!"* Hew was created by a Dwarf smith who had become engaged in a feud with the Dryads of a nearby forest where he obtained the wood for his forge. It proved useful enough that, in time, it passed down to adventurers and rangers, ultimately becoming lost when its previous bearer perished. ## Effects *"The door in front of us was banded, barred from the other side, and had no lock we could access. Too tough to force it, too thick to cut through. Two swings of the axe, and it was splinters on the floor, the iron bands clattering to the ground."* Hew functions as a +1 Magic Battleaxe for anyone who can wield this weapon, and will always deal maximum damage to any plant-based objects or Plant monsters. Attunement will unlock the following benefits: ### First Level of Attunement *"Never seen him get jumped or caught on the wrong foot at any time. No matter what, he always seems ready for trouble. Though, he does twitch something awful in the woods."* At this level, the wielder of Hew gains the following effects of the Alert Feat so long as they are within any form of woodland terrain. This becomes active as soon as they enter wooded terrain, and ceases as soon as they step foot outside. The quality or type of woodland doesn't matter; it actives so long as there are trees around. Even swampland or dead forests enable this ability for the wielder. \columnbreak > ##### Effects >* You cannot be surprised while conscious. >* Other creatures do not gain bonuses to attacking you from Stealth. ### Second Level of Attunement *"I held that axe as tight as I could. We were too late, the Succubi had been summoned. One of them blew a kiss at me, and I felt my mind drowning; and suddenly, it just fell away, letting me see and move as I wanted again."* At this level, the wielder of Hew makes any saving throws against the Charmed condition with Advantage, and any effects causing penalties to their saving throws (e.g. Mind Sliver) are ignored for Charmed saving throws only. This benefit is conferred so long as the wielder is attuned; however, the negation of saving throw penalties only occurs when Hew is being held by the wielder.
