Notes for GMs

A Magic Item by any other name...

Some items in the catalogue have been renamed to make them sound more expensive, while others may or may not be magical depending on GM discretion:

  • The perfume offered in Lot 5 may function as Perfume of Bewitching (XGtE p. 138). If it does, the vial contains enough for 10 applications.

  • The designer parure offered in lot 12 may use an Elemental Essence Shard (TCoE p. 127) as the centrepiece in its pendant. Alternatively, it may be non-magical but contain diamonds that can be used as spell components.

  • The satchel offered in lot 16 functions exactly as a Heward's Handy Haversack (DMG p.174)

  • If a character purchases the magical tattooing session offered in Lot 10, allow them to acquire one magic tattoo (TCoE p. 118) of up to uncommon rarity.

Hidden Dangers

If you want some potential for trouble at your auction, consider using one or more of the following hidden dangers:

  • The luckstone offered in Lot 9 is in fact a Stone of Ill Luck, which gives the wielder a −2 penalty to all ability checks and saving throws while they remain attuned to it. It appears to be a Stone of Good Luck to anyone who attempts to identify it. However, characters who speak Thieves' Cant will recognise the word "takali" in the item description as being Thieves' Cant for "cursed".

  • The Boots of Elvenkind offered in Lot 17 are not cursed, but have a rather distinctive pattern on their soles—a pattern which the city watch have already connected with a series of recent burglaries. Characters who speak Thieves' Cant will recognise the word "turyas" in the item description as being Thieves' Cant for "evidence".

  • The Display Mask used in Lot 13 once belonged to a cloud giant smiling one (see VGtM p. 146), and is currently being sought by a religious order of cloud giants who consider it to be a sacred artefact.
