Griffon's Talon

Weapon (longsword) legendary (requires attunement)

A longsword of simple yet elegant design, it was created during the early days of the old Orelonian Empire by an forgotten dwarven smith. Supposedly commissioned by a man known simply as the First Martineau, Griffon's Talon forever serves as the symbol of the family. It is currently in the possession of Sir Galleren de Martineau, the current heir to the family legacy.

Dormant

While attuned to this magic sword, you gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon. Additionally, you can cast the spell find greater steed through the sword, however you are only able to summon a griffon when the spell is cast through the blade. If you have cast the spell this way, you cannot cast it to summon an additional mount if you have access to the spell. Once you have cast the spell this way, you cannot do so again until you complete a long rest.

While mounted, you can use your bonus action to command the griffon to make once claw attack against a target within range. Otherwise, it acts independently at the end of your turn if not mounted.

If you fall unconscious or die the griffon does not immediately disappear, but instead will protect your body and attempt to avenge you.

Awakened

The bonus to attack and damage rolls increases to +2.

Additionally, the summoned griffon gains the following benefits:

  • It gains a bonus to its natural armour equal to your proficiency bonus.
  • Its hit point maximum increases by a number equal to 5 times your level.
  • You can add your proficiency bonus to any ability check or saving throw that the griffon makes.
Exalted

The bonus to attack and damage rolls increases to +3. Additionally, you can now cast the holy weapon spell on the blade without requiring concentration. If you dismiss the spell and release the burst of radiance, your summoned griffon is immune to the effects. Once you have cast the spell this way, you cannot do so again until you complete a long rest.

The summoned griffon gains the following benefits:

  • When you use your bonus action to command the griffon to to attack, it will use its full multiattack against the target.
  • The griffon’s attacks are considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to non-magical attacks.
  • It gains a +3 bonus to its attack and damage rolls.
