# Soul Reaper When a lich gathers souls, not all of them will be fed to its phylactery. Humanoids who show promise as loyal minions first have their souls severed from their corporeal body; then they are taught a number of minor magical secrets by their new undead master. In exchange for a lich’s “generosity”, the spirits in its thrall are set loose upon the outside world as soul reapers. Such minions are tasked with harvesting souls in a *soul lantern* (see the “Soul Reaper Item” sidebar) to bring back for their master's phylactery. Although a soul reaper may initially be grateful for being spared, it is not completely unheard of for such spirits to abandon their life of servitude to collect souls for their own profit. Naturally, liches tend to instill fear of severe retribution into the hearts of their reapers to suppress any notion of desertion. ___ > ## Soul Reaper >*Medium Undead*, *Typically Neutral Evil* > ___ > - **Armor Class** 12 > - **Hit Points** 77 (14d8 + 14) > - **Speed** 0 ft., fly 40 ft. **Proficiency Bonus** +3 > ___ > ***Incorporeal Movement.*** The reaper can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an object. > > ***Turn Resistance.*** The reaper has advantage on saving throws against any effect that turns undead. > > ***Unusual Nature.*** The reaper doesn't require air, food, drink, or sleep. > > ### Actions > ***Paralyzing Touch.*** *Melee Spell Attack*: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. *Hit*: 19 (3d10 + 3) cold damage. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. > > ***Ghostly Flames (Recharge 5–6).*** The reaper chooses up to three creatures it can see within 20 feet of it. Each target must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 24 (7d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. > > ***Harvest Soul (1/Day).*** The reaper uncovers the hood of its soul lantern to expose the fell flames within, targeting one creature that it can see within 10 feet of it. The target must make a DC 14 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the target drops dead as its soul is magically drawn into the reaper’s lantern. On a successful save, the target takes 19 (3d12) necrotic damage, and if this damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, its soul is harvested as if it failed the saving throw.

\pagebreakNum >##### Soul Reaper Item > ***Soul Lantern.*** A reaper always carries an adamantine lantern to harvest souls and as a focus for its ghostly flames. This lantern is of the bullseye type, emitting a bright blue light in a 60-foot cone and dim light for an additional 60 feet. The reaper can use a bonus action to light the lantern with its essence, which remains burning for up to 24 hours. > > Only one soul can be trapped in a *soul lantern* at a given time. The lantern must be lit in order to imprison a soul. Should the lantern’s fire be extinguished, the soul inside will move on to the afterlife unless the lantern is within 5 feet of the soul’s body, in which case you reproduce the effect of the *raise dead* spell. A mortal creature that seizes a lit *soul lantern* from a reaper can keep its supernatural flames fueled for 1 day with a vial of blood from a humanoid killed within the past 24 hours. > > Should a reaper lose its lantern, it will stop at nothing to reclaim it, lest it faces the potential wrath of its lich overseer.
