Monk Tradition: Way of the Psionic Flow

When a person with psionic powers finds a way to combine their psionics with their ki and then chooses to hone that power through inner development, their powers may manifest as the way of the psionic flow. By combining their psionic powers with ki, they become capable of projecting their powers outward, allowing them to temporarily manifest and manipulate objects and creatures even from a distance.

Powerful monks trained in this tradition are generally rare, not only due to the rarity of psionic abilities, but also because their ability to manipulate others is generally frowned upon. Those that do choose to pursue this technique usually only hone their skills enough to control their psionic abilities rather than mastering them.

Psionic Ki

Starting at 3rd level, you’ve learned to bend your ki in such a way to manipulate the world around you. You gain the following psionic abilities:

  • Projected Strike. When you make an unarmed strike, you can project your strikes to hit opponents from afar. When you take the attack action, you can give your attacks a range of 30/120 feet. Once you’ve used this ability, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest, unless you expend 1 ki point to use it again.
  • Psionic Shield. When you’re hit with an attack, you can expend ki points to create a shield. You gain a +2 to your armor class per ki point spent. This shield lasts until the start of your next turn.
  • Impactful Hit. The first time you hit a creature with an unarmed strike on your turn, you can deal additional force damage to the target, that damage equals one roll of your martial arts die.

Forced Demand

When you reach 6th level, you can use your action to bend your enemies to your will. The target must succeed on a wisdom saving throw against your ki save dc or immediately use its reaction to perform the following commands:

  • Disarm. The target drops whatever it is holding and can’t pick it back up until the end of its next turn.
  • Hold. The target freezes in place and cannot move until the end of its next turn. A flying creature stays aloft, provided that it is able to do so. If it must move to stay aloft, it flies the minimum distance needed to remain in the air.
  • Kneel. The target falls prone, and must use its action to get up.
  • Silence. The target cannot speak until the end of its next turn.
  • Speak. The target must voice what it is currently thinking until the start of its next turn.

Once a target fails the saving throw, you can’t use this feature again until you finish a short or long rest, unless you expend 2 ki points to use it again.

Enlightened Ki

At 11th level, you can add your intelligence modifier to your ki save DC. (minimum of +1) Additionally, when you spend a ki point as part of taking the attack action on your turn, you can change the damage type of those attacks into force damage.

Extended Control

When you reach 17th level, you can keep a target under your control for a longer period of time. When you use your Forced Demand feature, the duration is increased to 1 minute, during which you can expend 1 ki point to make the target perform one of the given commands as a bonus action. When you extend the feature this way, you have to concentrate (as if you were concentrating on a spell), and the target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Additionally, you can now also give the following commands:

  • Attack. The target makes one weapon attack against a creature of your choice within its reach.
  • Move. The target moves up to 30 feet or its full speed, whichever is higher, in a direction of your choosing.
