Rime Spear

3rd level evocation

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: 40 ft.
  • Components: S, M (A small ice cube)
  • Duration: Instantaneous
  • Class: Druid, Sorcerer

You gather cold energies around you and project them towards a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack. On a hit, a creature takes 5d6 cold damage and has its speed reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn (to a minimum of 5 ft.)

In addition, if the target is Medium or smaller, it must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature becomes petrified until the start of your next turn.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 and the size of creature that can be petrified increases by one for each level above 3rd.

Regarding Petrification

Usually, petrification has targets turn to stone, rather than ice. This means creatures that contain immense heat, such as a phoenix, can be petrified by this spell when, logically, that shouldn't be the case. You can us the following rules when that is the case:

If the target has innate heating (such as the Heated Body trait) the creature automatically succeeds. Examples include azers, salamanders and fire elementals.
