## Chosen Kobold **Kobolds** are said to be distant descendants of the Dragon Gods, carrying hints of their power within their blood. Often are they found in the service of adult or ancient dragons - or any creature able and willing to host them - as thralls or as sycophants, and are usually willing to die for their cause. However, kobolds are known to be craftier and more intelligent than they seem. Purportedly, groups of kobolds are capable of building complex structures and traps quickly, though usually at the cost of stability. Alone, they form tyrannical, hierarchical societies, with very simple class structures. These roaming tribes, families, or clans will wander until they find a suitable cavern, lair, or structure to squat in or conquer, and will rapidly construct fortifications and lodging, and hunt local wildlife for food. Willful contact with civilization is rare, but not unthinkable; some kobolds can be found pursuing their own goals in the world at large. Not much is known of kobolds as a species. Kobold "culture", or any rituals specific to their kind alone, is rather vague, as most information on such comes from studies of aggressive, dragon-worshipping clans, or the second-hand accounts of wandering adventurers. Among the unknown is the upper limits of their age; the average lifespan of a kobold is estimated pessimistically, due to their recorded tendency to die in combat or in service to some greater being. Academic efforts to learn from lone kobold tribes are in progress, but usually are met with scorn or violence. ### The Chosen **Kobold** tribes are known to frequently worship or serve an adult or ancient dragon. Dragons of this age can willingly suffuse their minions with the ambient magic of their lairs, resulting in mutations, madness, and in rare cases, great strength. Kobolds who are chosen in such a way, and survive, are singled out in their tribes to represent something greater: the path to true dragonhood. Whether revered or shunned for their treatment, these individuals are removed (or remove themselves) from the clan as a trial for their hopeful ascension, and as they grow in strength, they take on the powerful traits of their dragon masters. ### Chosen Kobold Traits As a Chosen Kobold, you gain the following traits: **Ability Score Increase.** Your Charisma score increases by 1, and one other ability score of your choice increases by 2. **Age.** Kobolds reach adulthood at age 6 and have been reported to reach as old as 50, though the upper boundaries of their age are unclear. **Size.** Kobolds are between 2 and 3 feet tall and weigh between 25 and 35 pounds on average. Your size is Small. **Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet. **Darkvision.** You can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. **Languages.** You can read, write, and speak Common and Draconic.
**The Favored.** You have been infused with the power of a mighty dragon. Choose one type of dragon from the table below. The damage type of your breath weapon is determined by the dragon type, as shown. | Dragon | Damage Type | |:---:|:-----------:| | Black | Acid | | Blue | Lightning | | Brass | Fire | | Bronze | Lightning | | Copper | Acid | | Gold | Fire | | Green | Poison | | Red | Fire | | Silver | Cold | | White | Cold |
**Dragon's Pride.** *(replaces the Sunlight Sensitivity feature)* You can choose to add 1d4 to a Charisma check or saving throw that you fail, potentially turning the failure into a success. If the check or saving throw still fails, you subtract 1d4 from the next ability check you make within the next hour. This feature can be used a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, with all uses refreshing when you finish a long rest.
**Draconic Aspirations.** *(replaces the Grovel, Cower, and Beg feature)* As you grow, your scales begin to turn to the color of your chosen type, and a breath weapon reveals itself to you. By 10th level, you are the color of your chosen dragon type.
As a bonus action, you can force one creature within 5 feet of you to make a Dexterity saving throw (DC equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus) or take 2d4 damage of the type of your chosen dragon's breath weapon, taking half damage on a success. The damage increases to 3d4 at 5th level, 4d4 at 10th level, and 5d4 at 15th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
At 10th level you gain a 15 foot flying speed, as your fledgling wings grow to finally carry you.
**Apotheosis.** At 17th level, you can transform yourself into an adult dragon of your chosen type. The transformation lasts for 1 hour. Any equipment you are wearing or carrying melds into your new form or falls to the ground (your choice). For the duration, you use the game statistics of the adult dragon instead of your own, but you retain your languages, personality, and memories. You can’t use a dragon’s Change Shape or its legendary or lair actions. Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again for 7 days.
