Way of the Mantis Warrior
Mantis Style
At level 3, you have studied the techniques mantises use to hunt and defend themselves, and have adapted them for someone your size. You gain the following benefits while using a sickle in each hand:
-
You can use your sickles in place of unarmed attacks for your Martial Arts feature.
-
You gain +1 to your attack and damage rolls of melee weapon attacks using the sickles.
-
You gain a climbing speed equal to half your base movement speed (bonus to movement speeds, such as Unarmored Movement, are added after).
You may also gain these benefits if you possess a Natural Weapon that deals Slashing damage, such as a Tabaxi’s Cat’s Claws or as a Path of the Beast Barbarian’s Form of the Beast (Claws).
Moreover, you gain proficiency in Acrobatics if you haven’t already.
Enhanced Slashes
Starting at level 6, your experience with this fighting style has led you to create special techniques to bring your combat capabilities to the next level. You can use the following techniques while using a sickle or equivalent in each hand:
-
Counter Slash: When an opponent within reach attacks you and misses, you may spend your reaction to take an opportunity attack against that opponent. You may spend 1 ki point to make that attack at advantage.
-
Distant Slash: At the cost of 1 ki point, you may spend your Action to fire off a powerful cutting wave of wind. All creatures in a 30 foot line must make a Dexterity saving throw, receiving two times your Monk die as Slashing damage on a failure and none on a success.
-
Quick Slash: While taking the Dash action or Step of the Wind to run towards or near a target, you may spend your reaction to attack them as you move. This attack is not considered an opportunity attack. Regardless of whether you hit or not, that target cannot make an opportunity attack if you move out of their reach.
Moreover, attacks with your sickles count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistances and immunity to non-magical weapon attacks.
Experienced Claws
At level 11, your time fighting in this style has granted you insight on how to better move, both in travel and in combat. The benefits of Mantis Style are improved as such:
- The bonus to your attack and damage rolls of melee weapon attacks using your sickles increases to a +2.
- Your climbing speed increases to equal your movement speed.
Moreover, your proficiency in Acrobatics is heightened, and your proficiency bonus is doubled for any check that uses it.
Master Mantis
At level 17, you have reached the pinnacle of strength and ability with the Mantis Style. Your Enhanced Slashes feature is greatly enhanced with your expertise, granting you the following techniques:
-
Retributive Slash: You may spend 1 ki point and your reaction to take an opportunity attack against an opponent if they have hit you with a melee weapon attack. You may spend another Ki point to make that attack at advantage.
-
Grand Slash: When using the Distant Slash technique, you now only use one of your attacks in your Attack action instead of your entire action and the range is doubled to 60 feet, and enemies that succeed on the saving throw still receive half of the damage they would on a failure. In addition, you may spend 1~3 additional Ki points to add an additional damage die per Ki point spent. If you make two attacks in the same turn and both of your waves are sent in the same direction, you may combine them into a single enormous wave, doubling the maximum range again to 120 feet and adding their damage dice together.
-
Unseen Slash: At the cost of 3 ki points while taking the Dash action or Step of the Wind, you can spend your reaction while moving to attack all creatures you pass by as you move, and all attacks are made at advantage. These attacks are not considered opportunity attacks. You can only attack each creature once this way, and all creatures attacked cannot make attacks of opportunity against you, regardless if the attack hit or missed.
