Monastic Tradition

At 3rd level, a monk gains the Monastic Tradition feature. The following options are available to a monk, in addition to those offered in the Player's Handbook: the Way of the Dragon Talon.

Way of the Dragon Talon

The Way of the Dragon Talon is a strict and ferocious style mimicking the preternatural and elegant movements of the great dragons. A Dragon Talon monk deals devastating blows, channels energy into elemental strikes, and walks with a reptilian grace. Dragon Talon Monks are often reveled by or the fierce followers of dragon-kind, who gift their graceful talents or ferociously impose them upon such martial artists.

Draconic Disciple

3rd-Level Way of the Dragon Talon Monk feature

Your menacing or noble presence actively manifests and unsettles or shakes others as you present yourself with the grace of a dragon.

You gain proficiency with the Intimidation skill if you don't already have it. You also learn to speak, read, and write Draconic or one other language of your choice.

In addition, you channel the strength of a Draconic Subtype you learn from the most. Pick one of the following Dragon Subtypes. The damage type associated with each dragon is used by features you gain later:

Draconic Subtype
Dragon Damage Type
Black Acid
Blue Lightning
Brass Fire
Bronze Lightning
Copper Acid
Gold Fire
Green Poison
Red Fire
Silver Cold
White Cold

You also flourish the mighty claws of a dragon with your strikes. When you hit with an unarmed strike, you may make the damage type Piercing or Slashing damage, instead of Bludgeoning damage.

Flowing Breath Fists

3rd-Level Way of the Dragon Talon Monk feature

You gain the ability to channel your Ki into destructive waves of energy, like those created by the dragons you emulate When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of the attacks with an exhalation of draconic energy in either a 15-foot cone or a 30-foot line that is 5 feet wide (your choice). Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw against your Ki Save DC, taking the damage type of your Draconic Subtype equal to two rolls of your Martial Arts Die on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful save.

At 11th-Level, the damage of this feature increases to three rolls of your Martial Arts Die.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. While you have no uses available, you can spend 1 Ki Point to use this feature again.

Dragon Tenacity

6th-Level Way of the Dragon Talon Monk feature

You gain the ability to channel your ki to gain resilience to elemental might. As a reaction to when you take damage associated with your Draconic Subtype, you can spend 1 ki point to gain resistance to that damage type for 1 hour.

Wyrm Wing Beat

6th-Level Way of the Dragon Talon Monk feature

When you use your Step of the Wind, you can unfurl spectral draconic wings from your back that vanish at the end of your turn. While the wings exist, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Draconic Manifestation

11th-Level Way of the Dragon Talon Monk feature

The power of your draconic spirit now radiates from you, warding your allies or inspiring fear in your enemies. As a bonus action, you can create an aura of draconic power that radiates 10 feet from you for 1 minute. For the duration, you gain one of the following effects of your choice:

  • Frightful Presence. When you create this aura and on a bonus action on subsequent turns, you can choose a creature within the aura. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your Ki Save DC or become frightened of you for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a successful save.
  • Resistance. You and your allies within the aura have resistance to your Draconic Subtype's damage type.

Once you create this aura, you can't create it again until you finish a Long Rest, or unless you expend 3 Ki Points to create it again.

Flowing-Ki Dragon-Talon Style

11th-Level Way of the Dragon Talon Monk feature

You gain the ability to strike out at your foes with fierce primordial power. As a bonus action, you can expend up to 1 to 3 ki points to grant your unarmed strikes a bonus to damage rolls when you attack with them. The damage is considered your Draconic Subtype's damage type. The bonus equals double the number of ki points you spent. This bonus lasts for 1 minute or until you use this feature again.

Dragon Soul

17th-Level Way of the Dragon Talon Monk feature

You've draconic spirit has reached its peak. You gain the following benefits:

  • Augment Breath. When you use Flowing Breath Fists, you can spend 1 additional ki point to augment its shape and power. The exhalation of draconic energy becomes either a 60-foot cone or a 100-foot line that is 5-feet wide (your choice), and each creature in that area takes damage equal to four rolls of your Martial Arts Die on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful save.
  • Blindsight. You gain blindsight out to 10 feet. Within that range, you can effectively see anything that isn't behind total cover, even if you're blinded or in darkness. Moreover, you can see an invisible creature within that range, unless the creature successfully hides from you.
  • Dragon Wings. You sprout draconic wings or manifest a draconic form of flying equal to your walking speed. Additionally, when you use Wyrm Wing Beat, you take both the Disengage and Dash action as part of the bonus action.
  • Elemental Immunity. You are immune to the damage type of your Draconic Subtype.
