Gaining Inspiration

Under this optional rule inspiration can still be obtained in the same ways listed in the Player's Handbook, however the following changes are made to the way inspiration is gained:

• Player characters can have up to three instances of inspiration at any given time, however these do not carry over from one game session to another.

• Player characters begin each game session with one instance of inspiration each.

Using Inspiration

If you have inspiration you can expend it whenever you make a roll of a d20 to roll the die again and use either result, you can do this after you see the initial roll, but before the DM states whether the roll succeeds or fails and any of its effects are applied. Additionally, if you are at 0 hit points and making death saving throws, you can choose to spend all instances of inspiration you currently have to treat the next death saving throw you make as having rolled a 20.

Finally, if you have inspiration, you can reward another player for good roleplaying, clever thinking, or simply doing something exciting in the game. When another player character does something that really contributes to the story in a fun and interesting way, you can give up one instance of inspiration to give that character inspiration. If you are awarding inspiration to another character in combat you can do so only during your turn or as a reaction when another character makes a roll of a d20.
