Simplified House Rules

A Word Of Warning

These are house rules and come to change if it becomes apparent that they are too strong. This also applies to official D&D content if it becomes needed.

Character Creation

First Level Feat

All characters get to select a feat at first level.

Intellect Points

When creating your character you gain a number of Intellect Points, equal to your Intelligence Modifier, which you can spend to gain additional proficiencies.

You can spend Intellect Points in the following ways:

  • 1 Point: Any tool, weapon, or language proficiency (GM approval)
  • 2 Points: One skill proficiency
  • 3 Points: Double your proficiency in one skill or tool provided by your class or background

Combat

Better Critical Hits

When you score a critical hit on an attack roll, you instead of rolling a double amount of damage dice you take the maximum of said damage dice and then roll that dice again. After this, you add whatever modifier you have on the attack. If the attack involves other damage, such as from the rogue's Sneak Attack Feature or a divine smite from a paladin that attacks damage will also be considered into this total.

Fast Health Potions

During combat, you can drink a potion of healing as a bonus action or as an action. However it stills costs an action to feed a potion of healing to another person.

Other

Advantage & Disadvantage

If multiple sources effect an ability check, attack, saving throw etc in the form of advantage and disadvantage the type that has most "sources" will be applied. For example, if two sources gives you advantage on a dexterity check but one gives you disadvantage you still get advantage on that check.

Class features

Cantrip Versatility

1-st level Cleric, Druid & Wizard feature (enhances spellcasting)

Whenever you gain a level in one of these classes, you can replace one cantrip you learned from this spellcasting feature with another cantrip from the class spell list.

Extra Attack Multiclassing

A character gains the Extra Attack feature when it gains 5 or more combined levels in two or more of the following classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, or Ranger. Each of these classes gains the Extra Attack feature when you reach 5th-level in that class, and it always feels terrible to multiclass 3 levels into Fighter and 2 levels into Barbarian… but not get Extra Attack compared to if you just stuck with one class. I experienced this, as a player, and want to provide a bit more flexibility for martials to pick up their “key feature” of Extra Attack.

Spell Versatility

Applies to all classes that cannot prepare spells on a long rest (enhances spellcasting)

Whenever you finish a long rest, you can replace one spell you learned from this Spellcasting feature with another spell from the class spell list. The new spell must be the same level as the spell you replace.

Magical Inspiration

1st-level bard feature (enhances Bardic Inspiration)

If a creature has a Bardic Inspiration die from you and casts a spell, the creature can roll that die and add the number rolled to one damage or healing roll of the spell. The Bardic Inspiration die is then lost.

Arcane Prowess

As a wizard, you study the arcane arts greatly. At 7th level, you obtain mastery over the weave and study of the arcane arts. You gain proficiency in arcana, if you already have proficiency in arcana you may double your proficiency bonus in arcana.

Skills

Physical Intimidation

You can choose to add either your strength or charisma score modifier to the skill intimidation. The ability score used should reflect how the character is being intimidating.

Scientific Persuasion

You can choose to add either your intelligence or charisma score modifier to the skill persuasion. However the former is only applicable when trying to persuade someone with the logic or factual information within your argument, and not as a way of "being smooth with words", ask your Dungeon master if it applies. This type of persuasion is mostly applicable while talking with scholars, researchers and such.
