Legion Devils
Legion devils are high ranking devils that only answer to pit fiends and their archdevil overlords. These fiends are responsible for commanding the infernal legions against demonic hordes as well as leading interplanar incursions throughout the multiverse in their quest for souls.
Appearance
Legion devils share many similarities to the powerful pit fiend such as their hulking stature, crimson red skin, protruding horns, and barbed tails. However, instead of a pair of bat-like wings, legion devils have sprouted an additional set of limbs that grant them tremendous strength, almost rivaling that of their pit fiend masters.
Infernal Warmongers
The sole purpose of a legion devil’s existence is to lead their infernal subordinates into battle. These fiends typically have multiple battalions of devils under their command that they can summon at will. In the infernal hierarchy, the legion devil is considered to be right beneath pit fiends in authority. As a result, it is not uncommon for a pit fiend to have several legion devils that answer directly to them. Only by proving their worth in battle are legion devils able to be promoted to a pit fiend.
Battle Tactics
Although legion devils possess considerable might and power, what truly makes them dangerous is their intellect and strategy. When one encounters a legion devil, it is certainly never by itself as they are typically accompanied by a small entourage of devils. Even if the legion devil seems to be isolated, they are capable of summoning a squad of devils in an instant.
Coordinated Tactics
When in combat, the legion devil commands it subordinates as a single unit, coordinating each of their unique abilities to exploit the weakness of its foes. Thanks to their infernal magics, they are able to empower their infernal allies, causing even the smallest imp to become a deadly threat.
The legion devil will not hesitate to sacrifice one of its subordinates if it means that it will lead to a victory. Although most devils, especially high-ranking ones, fear the thought of dying and demotion; those who are sacrificed in service to the legion devil do not suffer these penalties, and even in some cases, are reborn even higher into the infernal hierarchy.
Elusive Combatants
Although the legion devil relies heavily on commanded its allies in battle, it is a tremendous threat by itself. The legion devil relies on misdirect and confusion to keep its enemies off balance using spells such as Mirror Image and Mislead to confuse their enemy. When facing multiple opponents, they resort to using area of effect spells such as Conjure Barrage to weaken multiple opponents or to provide cover fire for their infernal allies through spells like Fireball or Flame Wall. If the tide of the battle seems to turn against the legion devil, it will resort to magically summoning more devils to fill in the ranks but will ultimately retreat using Plane Shift if truly outmatched. However, if a legion fiend retreated, it is imperative that it be hunted down and destroyed for it will return much more prepared with a more powerful legion of devils behind it.
Legion Devil Contracts
As with any devil, legion devils will attempt to claim the soul of a mortal in exchange for a boon. If a legion devil manages to forge a contract an adventurer, that creature gains the following benefits as part of this contract:
