# Escent ## Creatures of Ether Escents are the primary sedentary inhabitants of the Ethereal Plane, and after prolonged amounts of time there they have become able to mold the substance of the plane itself. Escent settlements are striking bastions of solid structure amidst the ethereal blankness, but the ether-melding powers of the escents manifest in subconscious ways as well. The area around large escent settlements often has strange vine-like growths that cause the area to become difficult terrain. Given enough time, escents can shape etherstuff into objects, even while on the material plane. ## Mythology The defining story of escent culture is their creation myth, which describes an unnamed deity being struck down into the ethereal plane by a cursed hammer wielded by the dwarven deity Moradin. This deity created the escents there before dying, but Moradin's curse caused them to develop a weakness to the metals of the forge which has persisted to this day. Because of this curse, all escents regard dwarves with disdain, despite rarely actually meeting any. ## Always Learning Escents who come to the material plane are often intent on finding out everything they can about the plane’s structures and inhabitants. Escents have a very long memory, but their recollection is sometimes hazy; some escents have a tendency to confuse members of one race with those of another, or speak with a strange combination of formal and informal language. \columnbreak ### Escent Traits ***Ability Score Increase.*** Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.
***Age.*** Escents live for roughly 500 to 600 years, after which they are dispersed and their energy is returned to their plane of origin.
***Alignment.*** Escents typically have a neutral alignment, but this may change depending on their past experiences.
***Size.*** Escents are typically around 6 to 7 feet tall. Your size is Medium.
***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet. You also have a fly speed of 30 ft, but you cannot fly more than 1 foot above the ground.
***Curse of the Forge.*** All escents are affected by Moradin's curse. You cannot add your strength or dexterity bonus to attacks you make with metal weapons.
***Craft from Ether.*** You can create objects out of the material of the ether. Over the course of a long rest, you can create an object out of etherstuff that measures no more than 1 foot on any side, or alternatively a weapon of a type you are proficient with.
***Ethereal Flicker.*** You partially fade into the ethereal plane until the end of your next turn. While in this state, weapon attacks against you not made with metal weapons have disadvantage, and you can walk through nonmetal walls with no difficulty. If you end your turn inside of a wall when this ability expires, you are pushed to the nearest open space and take 5 (1d10) bludgeoning damage.
