Pugilist Fight Club: Monastic Tradition

Pugilists in the Monastic Tradition fight club are united in their ability to magically harness the energy that flows in their bodies, known as ki. Whether channeled as a striking display of combat prowess or a subtler focus of defensive ability and speed, this energy infuses all that a pugilist in this fight club does.

Bonus Proficiency

3rd level Monastic Tradition feature

You gain proficiency in the Acrobatics skill, if you don’t have it already. If you do, you gain proficiency in your choice of the Athletics or Insight skill.

Ki

3rd level Monastic Tradition feature

You have learned to harness the mystic energy of ki. Your access to this energy is represented by a pool of ki points you have equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier (minimum 3 points). When you use an ability that costs moxie points, you can spend ki points instead. In addition, before you make a Wisdom ability check, you can spend a ki point to add your Strength modifier to the result. You regain all expended ki points when you finish a long rest.

Martial Arts

6th level Monastic Tradition feature

You've learned several martial art techniques for both defence and offence. You can use each of these techniques once, and regain their use when you finish a short or long rest:

  • Deflect Missiles. You can use your reaction to deflect or catch a missile when you are hit by a ranged weapon attack. When you do so, the damage you take from the attack is reduced by 1d10 + your Strength modifier + your pugilist level. If you reduce the damage to 0, you can catch the missile if it is small enough for you to hold in one hand and you have at least one hand free. If you catch a missile in this way, you can make a ranged attack with a range of 20/60 using the weapon or piece of ammunition you just caught, as part of the same reaction. You make this attack with proficiency, regardless of your weapon proficiencies, and the missile counts as a pugilist weapon for the attack.

  • Slow Fall. You can use your reaction when you fall to reduce any falling damage you take by an amount equal to five times your pugilist level.

  • Stunning Strike. When you hit another creature with a melee weapon attack, you can attempt a stunning strike. The target must make a Constitution saving throw with a save DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier. The creature is stunned until the end of its next turn on a failed save, or cannot take reactions until the end of its next turn on a successful one.

Step of the Wind

11th level Monastic Tradition feature

Your base walking speed increases by 10 feet, your jump distances are doubled, and you can use a bonus action on each of your turns to take the Dash action.

Additionally, you gain the ability to move along vertical surfaces and across liquids on your turn without falling during the move.

Perfect Self

17th level Monastic Tradition feature

Your mastery of the ki flowing through your body has granted you the following benefits:

  • You are immune to disease and poison.
  • You can touch the ki of other minds so that you understand all spoken languages. Moreover, any creature that can understand a language can understand what you say.
  • You suffer none of the frailty of old age, and you can't be aged magically. You can still die of old age, however.
  • You no longer need food or water.

You can use your action to spend 4 moxie points to become invisible for 1 minute. During that time, you also have resistance to all damage but force damage.

You can spend 8 moxie points to cast the Astral Projection spell, without needing material components. When you do so, you can't take any other creatures with you.

Monastic Tradition Origins

As a Monastic Tradition pugilist, you decide how you found your ability to harness ki. Were you formerly a monk in a monastery? Did you learn how to harness ki elsewhere? Consult the Monastic Tradition table for a possible origin of your abilities.
