# Wizard Arcane Tradition: School of Demonology Though the practice has since expanded to encompass all Fiends, and even recently, being from the upper and inner planes, the school of demonology retains its name as an homage to its ancestral roots. Where conjurers study the planes and the boundaries between them, demonologists take an express interest in the denizens of those planes themselves. Through the hidden art of true names, these wizards collect vast magical censuses of the cosmos, using the power in an extraplanar entity’s name to break its magic or even bind it into temporary service. | Wizard level | Demonology Features | |:---:|:-----------:| | 2nd | Book of Names, Beginner Studies (1) | | 6th | Heightened Bindings, Bespoke Magic, Beginner Studies (2) | | 10th | Reinforced Bindings, Beginner Studies (3) | | 14th | Demons Within, Beginner Studies (4) | ### Book of Names *2nd-level Demonology feature* You may use your spellbook (or another book of your choice) as your book of names, containing the fruits of your demonological studies: the true names of extraplanar beings. When you learn the true name of a Celestial, Elemental, Fiend, or Fey creature, you may add it to your book of names. This process requires 25gp worth of special inks and ritual materials for a CR 1 or lower creature, and costs an additional 25gp for each CR above that. While you are holding your book of names, you may use your action to read aloud a creature’s true name from it to cause one of the following effects of your choice: * You summon the creature into an unoccupied space within 10 feet of you, provided its challenge rating is equal to or lower than your proficiency bonus. The creature is begrudgingly friendly towards you and your companions, and obeys your verbal commands (no action required by you). The creature takes its turn on your initiative, immediately after yours, and does its best to obey the last command you gave it, or it moves, Dashes, and Dodges to avoid danger if you issued none. The creature remains summoned for 1 minute, until you use this feature again, or until it is reduced to 0 hit points, whereupon it vanishes, returning to its home plane. If the creature vanishes as a result of being reduced to 0 hit points, you cannot summon it again with this feature for 24 hours. * You immediately end all effects on creatures of your choice within 30 feet of you that were causing them to be charmed or frightened by the creature. * You gain advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) and Charisma (Intimidation) checks you make against the creature for one hour. * You force the creature to make an Intelligence saving throw, taking psychic damage on a failed save or half as much on a successful one. Roll a number of d10s equal to twice your proficiency bonus to determine the psychic damage. * You grant the creature a number of temporary hit points equal to 1d10 plus your wizard level. You may read a true name from the book in this way a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long res. ### Beginner Studies *2nd-level Demonology feature* Your studies into demonology bear some fruit. You may add the true name of one Fey, Fiend, Elemental, or Celestial of your choice of CR 1 or lower into your Book of Names, without expending the usual materials cost. When you reach higher levels in this class, you may add one more name in this way, of a challenge rating equal to or lower than the value given in the table below. | Wizard level | Challenge Rating | |:---:|:-----------:| | 6th | 2 | | 10th | 3 | | 14th | 4 | > ##### Names of the Cosmos > Work with your GM to decide what true names look like in their world. For some, it might simply be whatever name a creature believes it is best or most accurately known as, while for others they could be words, sentences, or even entire paragraphs in Deep Speech or Draconic, summarising that creature's experiences and outlooks. > > When you gain a true name from your Beginner Studies feature, you should come up with an entirely new name and the creature it belongs to, so as not to gain a free advantage over any BBEGs your GM has planned for you. That said, you should feel encouraged to use the main function of your Book of Names to go out and collect more names; going on a quest to learn the antagonist's true name can be a rewarding story and a very useful bit of preparation.

When you do so, the spell can target the creature even if you cannot see it or it is behind total cover, so long as it is still within the spell’s range. ### Reinforced Bindings *10th-level Demonology feature* When you summon a creature using your Book of Names, it will remain indefinitely so long as you do not summon a different creature and it is not reduced to 0 hit points. ### Demons Within *14th-level Demonology feature* You may add the true name of any creature to your Book of Names, even another Humanoid, so long as it has an Intelligence of 4 or higher. When summoning a creature to you that is not a Fey, Fiend, Elemental, or Celestial, it rolls initiative separately, and will not obey your commands unless it chooses to of its own free will.
