The Legend of the Bloodhorn

Many peoples among the mountainfolks hold accounts of the Bloodhorn - also known as The Mountain Demon, or Horned Fiend -, an evil creature said to dwell on the frosty mountains' peaks. In this page follows one such tale:

"That time of year was the worst. Food was scarce enough on a normal day, but now the snow piled up, and whatever game could be found was hibernating. There, in the village on the sunless valley overshadowed by the rimed peaks, two brothers tried to provide for their ever-hungry village. “Up the mountain”, they decided, “Up the mountains, food for all!”, and their people rejoiced. They made their way carefully up the steep way to search for what they so direly needed. They were young and strong, and persevered through snowdrifts with the spirit of true hunters. At last, they reached a small clearing in the midst of the great rocks, where there was a herd of goats and rams, as big as can be. Marveled by such sight, they smiled.

The two planned their hunt, approaching quietly with bows out, unaware that one within the herd watched them with evil eyes. With malicious intent, that creature let out a hungry bleat, and the world stopped as all the animals in front of the brothers turned to face them, with red eyes and foaming mouths. The brothers screamed in fear, not as much for the hypnotized herd slowly moving their way, but for the growing shadow that now perched behind it. A simple goat seconds prior, now a demon of horror, its twisted horns painted red with human blood. Arrows flied in a panicked hurry, but left no scratch on the monster's body. The creature roared a bleat, approaching with its pack. Soon, the most inhuman screams followed, and the herd rejoiced with food for all.

Neither the screams of agonizing death nor the streams of blood ever reached the village, which for long starved. Then there came spring, and no hope of the brother’s return ever came. As the villagers' mourning ended, life went on, blissfully unaware of the bestial horror in the mountains above"

Up in the mountains, a great evil slumbers;

With blood-red horns, it stands tall;

When it wakes, it descends the mountains;

Bringing death upon us all.

If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet back and knocked prone.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Bloodhorn fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead. When it expends the last use of its Legendary Resistance, it reverts to goat form, and can't use its Shapechanger trait until the following day.

Regeneration (monstrous form only). The Bloodhorn regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn if it has 1 or more hit points. If the Bloodhorn takes damage from a silvered weapon, this trait doesn't function at the start of its next turn.

Standing Leap. The Bloodhorn's high jump is up to 10 feet, with or without a running start.

Shapechanger. The Bloodhorn can use its action to polymorph into a Huge monstrous beast, or back into its true form, which is that of a Large horned goat. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies. While transformed its statistics remain the same, but it gains access to its Multiattack and Regeneration traits, as well as to its Legendary Actions and Bite attack.

Sure-Footed. The Bloodhorn has advantage on Strength and Dexterity rolls for climbing, and against being shoved or knocked prone.

Actions

Multiattack. While in its monstrous form, the Bloodhorn makes one Ram attack, and two Bite attacks.

Ram. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d12+6) bludgeoning damage.

Bite (monstrous form only). Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (1d12+6) piercing damage plus 6 (1d12) necrotic damage.

Call of the Herd (1/Day). The Bloodhorn bleats loudly, affecting all goats and rams within 120 feet. Every suitable creature must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 minute, acting under the Bloodhorn's control. Willing creatures can choose to fail this test. A charmed creature can choose to repeat the saving throw at the end of its turn, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Legendary Actions

While in its monstrous form, the Bloodhorn can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Bloodhorn regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Ram (Costs 2 Actions). It moves up to 20 feet in a straight line against a target and makes a Ram attack.

Bite. It makes a Bite attack.
