Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • The dragon can summon 1d4 devils that are CR 6 or or lower. The dragon cannot use this feature again until all the devils are slain or dismissed..
  • The dragon can cast a 5th level Fireball without expending a spell slot.
  • The dragon can cast Wall of Fire. The effect lasts until the dragon loses concentration or uses this lair action again.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary infernal dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Portals to the Nine Hells appear within 6 miles of the dragon's lair allowing devils to pass through freely

  • The regions within 6 miles of the dragon's lair is perpetually warped by unquenchable hellfire

  • The stench of burning meat and scream fills the area within 6 miles of the dragon's lair.

When the dragon dies, all of these regional effects immediately fade

Infernal Dragons

When a dragon forges a pact with a powerful devil, it begins to transform into an infernal dragon. Due to the arrogant nature of most dragons, most infernal drakes only forge pacts with extremely powerful devils such as the archfiends themselves rather than their underlings. Although all archfiends have infernal dragons within their ranks, Tiamat claims the allegiance of most infernal dragons as she is the patron deity for many dragons across the multiverse. However, these dragons are always scheming to undermine their archfiend overlords to take their domain within the Nine Hells. In fact, some scholars have suspected an overarching conspiracy that Tiamat encourages her draconic kin to forge these pacts in order to usurp their archfiend masters allowing Tiamat and her draconic archfiends to unite the Nine Hells under her banner. However, the veracity of such claims is questionable at best.

Infernal Dragon's Appearance

As innately magical creatures, whenever a dragon forges an infernal pact, its very essence become intertwined with the magical bindings of these deal. As a result, the dragon's appearance begins to transform, taking on a devilish appearance. Their new form grants them considerable advantages over their base draconic body as their demonic hide allows them to shrug off most forms of conventional weapons and magics.

Infernal Dragon Tactics

Just like their devilish underlings, infernal dragons seek to acquire and claim the souls of mortals. If possible, the dragon prefers to simply corrupt their opponent or to bind their victim in an infernal contract as opposed to directly killing them. However, if violence is unavoidable, the infernal dragon can prove to be an extremely challenging opponent. In comparison to its kin, the infernal dragon's primary advantage is its durability thanks to their demonic scales. Additionally, their draconic nature also seems to grant them a natural immunity to many divine magics that specifically weaken fiends. However, despite their physical superiority, infernal dragon's never fight on even terms and will not hesitate to swarm their foes with their fiendish underlings to provide themselves an opportunity to gain the upper hand or flee if the situation requires.
