Wolf Drakes

At first glance, one could easily mistake a wolf drake for a warg or even a dire wolf due to their appearance. Wolf drakes are covered in a dense layer of down feathers that resembles a thick pelt. These down feathers not only protect these drakes from freezing, but also allows them to blend into their snowy surroundings. Despite their strange appearance, many scholars believe that wolf drakes are loosely related to white dragons, especially since both species seem to possess a natural affinity to hunting down prey, even just for sport.

Tundra Hunters

In the wild, wolf drakes are notorious pack hunters. By coupling their natural strength and speed along with their pack tactics, wolf drakes are easily able to assume the role as an apex predator in their respective biomes, even when competing with other megafauna such as remorhazs or behirs. Because of this, many denizens of these regions, such as frost giants and even white dragons prefer to tame these creatures using them as guardians or to aid them on raiding expeditions.

Combat Tactics

Encountering a pack of wolf drakes will almost nearly prove to be a fatal encounter. Unless injured or stranded, it is quite rare to encounter a single wolf drake. In such a situation, it would be wise to begin quickly search your surroundings in the event of a possible ambush. By itself, the wolf drake as a variety of weapons at its disposal to bring down prey such as its freezing bite and sharp claws. In combat, their primary tactic is to drain their opponent's vitality using their freezing fangs to force the prey’s movement to become more lethargic. Once slowed in this manner, the drake begins to use its sharp claws to lacerate their opponent. However, their claws are laced with a natural compound that violent reacts to exposed blood, inducing a form a frostbite into the wound. Such a strategy is incredibly effective when utilized by the entire pack which focuses on one target, slowing them down for the rest to rip their victims to pieces.

If hunting numerous prey at a time, the wolf drakes will implement a different strategy by “corralling” their prey with their frost breath. By coordinating their breath weapons in this manner, the drakes are able to box their prey to prevent their escape. Their primary goal in this circumstance to direct their prey to an ambush point wherein they are able to surround their prey in a “kill circle” freezing them all in a combined breath attack.
