Kitsune

You are a kitsune; a member of a race of foxlike humanoids renowned for their mischievous natures and innate magical power. All kitsune have two forms - one is that of a bipedal humanoid with numerous tails, while the other varies from one kitsune to the next. One commonality among all kitsune is their number of tails - each tail represents growth and experience. Kitsune are born with only one tail - most kitsune grow a new table roughly every hundred years as they grow and develop as people, but some have been known to develop their full nine tails in under a century.

Kitsune Traits

Ability Score Increase

As a kitsune, your wit and finesse - both social and physical - are the stuff of legend. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age

Kitsune are very long-lived among the mortal races. They mature at the same rate as humans, but they're considered young until they develop their second tail - often at around one hundred years of age. They typically live to the age of 800, at which point most kitsune have developed their ninth tail.

Alignment

While most kitsune are perfectly happy to fit into society, they often feature a mischievous streak that drives them towards chaotic alignments. They tend towards goodness, however - it is a rare kitsune that allows their pranking tendencies to seriously harm others.

Size

Kitsune vary in build as much as humans, with most falling between 5 and 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Accustomed to the twilight and dark forests, you can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Kitsune Shapechanging

You have two forms - your true form as a humanoid with tails, and one other form set by your subrace. You can choose to shift between your two forms as an action.

Kitsune Instincts

You have proficiency in one of the following skills of your choice: Deception or Persuasion.

Yokai Ancestry

You have advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the charmed condition on yourself.

Vulpine Meditation

Yokai spirits do not need to sleep, and neither do you. Magic can't put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness.

Languages

You can speak Common, Kitsune (a dialect of Sylvan), and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for your character.

Subrace

Three main subraces of kitsune exist, some featuring different second forms. Choose one of these subraces.

Wild Kitsune

Your second form is that of a fox. You can turn into a fox (use the Cat statblock but add 60ft darkvision). All of your game statistics are replaced by those of a fox, but you retain your alignment, personality, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. You also retain all of your skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of the fox. Your fox form can either have one tail, or as many tails as you have in your true form - you choose this every time you shapechange.

You are limited in the actions you can perform by the nature of your fox form, and cannot speak, cast spells, or take any other action that requires hands or speech. If your fox form reaches 0 hit points, you revert to your true form, with any excess damage carrying over to your hit points.

Cunning Kitsune

Your second form is that of a (tailless) humanoid of a race you choose. Your physical appearance and characteristics (including height and weight) change to that of your second form while you are transformed, though not so much that your size changes.

Additionally, you know the minor illusion cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the charm person spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the suggestion spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Foxfire Kitsune

Your second form is that of a (tailless) humanoid of a race you choose. Your physical appearance and characteristics (including height and weight) change to that of your second form while you are transformed, though not so much that your size changes.

Additionally, you know the firebolt cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the hellish rebuke spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the scorching ray spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
