## The Wendigo ### Origins The Wendigo is a supernatural creature who acted on pure malice and eating humans. It origins from the First Nation of Canada as a myth for cannibalism. It is said that people who resorted to cannibalism during a shortage of food during winter could turn into a Wendigo.
According to those myths, it is also possible to become a Wendigo by being possessed by the spirit of one when it visits your dreams or when you meet it walking at night through a forest. ### Adapting to Donjons & Dragons Adapting this creature into Donjons & Dragons is rather easy. The most important is to create the sense of winter and it is done so by giving the Wendigo a lair that follows its movements. This way, the creature is not restricted to only northern forests and can be a stand alone encounter or it can be mixed in the story line you've created.
This form of Wendigo has to be encountered in a forest as it can help it to hide and consume creatures. Being in a thick forest and encountering a creature you cannot see also gives a sense of feeling oppressed and backed into a wall which should be the goal of such an encounter. If your party is a bigger group, adding some undead of your choice might be a good idea to balance it out. I highly suggest you play to the wendigo strength of consuming the mind of your party and making the encounter as creepy as possible. \columnbreak
I also encourage you to read on the matter as there is a lot of stories and legends that could help you adapt this creature into your world. ### Lair Actions On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the wendigo takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the wendigo can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row: - The wind inside the snow storm becomes violent rendering the area heavily obscured. - Howling winds resembling distant screams fills the storm, any creature within it that are not deafened must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or take 7 (2d6) psychic damage and lose their reaction until the next lair action. - Lumps of snow falls from the nearby trees, any creatures in a 20-foot radius inside the storm must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or take 9 (2d8) cold damage and be knocked prone. > **Image credits:** >
