Monk Tradition: Way of the Phoenix
Introduction
Many myths surround these majestic beasts, the cycles of life and death, blazing new paths into the world. Monks in this tradition achieve a mythical connection with the phoenix , and look to leave their mark in the world around them, whether with their insights or their fists.
Fiery Hatchling
Starting at level 3, you can channel the power of the phoenix for short bursts. You gain the following benefit:
- Partial Phoenix Form. As a bonus action, you activate Partial Phoenix Form. Your hands become fiery talons, gaining 1 to hit, dealing fire damage equal to your Martial Arts die + your dexterity modifier. Your talons count as unarmed strikes. This form will last for 1 minute. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus. You regain all expended uses after you complete a long rest.
Spirited Fledgling
Starting at level 6, you can spread the restorative warmth of the phoenix amongst others. When you meditate for at least 5 minutes, any creatures, including yourself, within 15 feet of you receive points equal to your Proficiency Bonus. They can use these points to roll one hit dice per point without consuming it, or recover any feature that can be recovered in a short rest for 2 points. You can only use this feature once per day.
Majestic Flames
Starting at level 11, the phoenix within you manifests stronger. You gain the following benefits:
- Improved Partial Phoenix Form. Your talons now gain 2 to hit.
- Full Phoenix Form. As a bonus action, you can expend 3 ki points and become engulfed in flames for 10 minutes. In addition to the benefits of the Improved Partial Phoenix Form, any creature you touch, melee attack, touches you, or melee attacks you suffer fire damage equal to 1 Martial Arts die roll.
Cycle of Rebirth
Starting at level 17, you achieve a mythical bond with the phoenix, sharing more magic with you. You gain the following benefits:
-
Perfect Partial Phoenix Form. Your talons now gain 3 to hit. This applies to both the Partial and the Full Phoenix Forms.
-
Blazing Rebirth. When you are reduced to 0 hit points, or as an action when you have 0 ki points, your body can become consumed by the flames. After 3 turns, any creature within 15 feet of your body will receive the benefits of a short rest instantly, including rolling Hit Dice. You will be unconscious for 3 more turns. You can only use this feature once per day.
If you are killed, you can still benefit from this feature, but you have to wait 1d8 + 1 days to use it again.
