Wax Angel

by Paolo Davolio // Follow Echidna Design

The faithful ones light candles in the temples hoping for their prayers to be heard. When made sincerely the gesture carries plenty of meaning within itself, along with the intrinsic power that comes with it. As time passes and uncountable candles are lit and melted, the remaining wax can animate spontaneously into a so-called "wax angel". Such a creature is the embodiment of the power within prayers left unheard or particularly meaningful ones.

Wax angels can manifest themselves into abandoned temples, where the echoes of a forgotten faith can still resound. In other instances, they come to be into regular temples where they can be welcomed with a variety of different attitudes: for some, they are saints delivered to help the ones in need, while for others they might be the embodiment of a curse sent as divine punishment, or a disruptive monsters that must be contained.

Wax angels usually have their own personality and agenda that revolves around the kind of prayers they originated from. This can make them merciful, vicious or anything in between, as their nature can vary as much as the emotions of the worshiping faithfuls. When fighting, they wrap the enemies in scorching wax, while accompanying their blows with constant prayers of blessing or anathemas.

Melted Form. If the angel takes fire damage, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks until the end of its next turn. During this time, the angel can't fly but can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing and ignores difficult terrain, nonmagical restraints, being grappled, restrained and prone.

Unusual Nature. The angel doesn't doesn’t require air, food, drink or sleep.

Actions

Multiattack. The angel can use an at-will spell. Then, it can make up to three Wax Touch attacks.

Wax Touch. Magical Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 30 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage plus 5 (1d10) fire damage. A creature that is not immune to fire damage has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks, and takes 5 (1d10) fire damage at the end of each of its turns. This lasts until the hot wax is removed with a successful DC 14 Dexterity check as an action, or until the creature is exposed to water or severe cold.

Doom of Wax (Recharge 5-6). Each creature of the angel's choice within 60 feet of it that is under the ongoing effects of Wax Touch makes a DC 15 Strength saving throw. A creature under the effects of its bane spell has disadvantage on this saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 38 (7d10) bludgeoning damage and it is restrained as the wax magically solidifies around the target (DC 15 to escape). On a successful save, the target takes half as much damage and no other effect. Either way, the ongoing effects of Wax Touch stop for this target.
A target that failed the saving throw must repeat it at the end if its next turn. If it fails, the target becomes petrified, turning into a statue of wax (instead of stone). A target turned into wax can be freed with remove curse or similar magic.

Spellcasting. The angel casts one of the following spells, requiring only verbal component and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 15):

At will: bane (no concentration required), bless (no concentration required), detect evil and good, thaumaturgy
1/day each: divination, remove curse, wall of ice (made of wax, deals fire damage instead of cold)
