Ability Scores & Feats
When you're leveling up and you finally hit that sweet 4th level in your class, you're given the choice to increase your ability scores, or to take a feat (If you have a half decent DM). But this choice can screw your fun over at later moments of the game when you think that if just you had taken that Feat or leveled up this Ability Score, you wouldn't have had as much trouble in that situation you had last session where you felt useless despite maybe doing the most in that last session.
This little alternative can help you with that, by attempting to remove the choice between taking an ASI, or Feat. The goal is to give you both options while still maintaining balance.
This alternative replaces the current structure of Ability Score Improvements and Feats, the below features are what would take it over. Under this alternative, Feats that give an ASI would no longer give one, and Fighters and Rogues extra ASI's would be replaced by the option below.
Feat
At 1st level, and again at 4th, 8th, and 16th level, you can pick a feat of your choice. You can take each feat only once, unless the feat’s description says otherwise.
Ability Score Improvement
When you reach 3rd level, and again at 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, and 18th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.
Martial Capability
Classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, and Rogue
When you reach 5th level, and again at 11th, 17th, and 19th, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 1, and you can pick a feat of your choice. You can increase an ability score above 20 using this feature as long as it's Strength, Constitution, or Dexterity, and you can take a feat more than once.
Later Development
I plan to add the Feats from PHB, XGE, TCE, and FTD at a later point in time. But that'll be no time soon.
