Nature spirit
Not many now about the existence of nature spirits, limited mainly to fey and the most powerful of druids, but these spawns of nature are present in nearly every forest, lake or mountain you come across.
Most people, however, will never see a nature spirit. The vast majority of nature spirits are barely sentient, if at all, and stay invisible as they instinctively protect and heal their surroundings.
The rare few
Whether it be due to a surge of wild magic, a quirk of nature or even divine intervention, occasionally a nature spirit will gain sentience. Although these spirits will initially continue maintaining the nature around them as they are instinctively driven to do, their newfound sentience, and resulting curiosity, will eventually drive them to explore the world.
Lost from nature
Being in contact less with nature as sentient spirits interact with the world of man, their natural instincts dull and what was once second nature to them now cost effort:
Whilst they maintain the ability to turn invisible and incorporeal, for sentient spirits, it requires focus and energy.
Their connection with beasts has also wained, no longer instinctively being able to understand the wants and needs of the animals they come across.
Distracted by the happenings around them, they do not constantly draw energy from the world and require rest.
Appearance
Being able to mold their shape and size almost without limit, sentient spirits can take on the shape of any creature they come across. Despite being able to take on any shape, however, their body always appears as a mass of glowing energy as apposed to flesh or fur. Additionally, as the amount energy in their body does not change when they change size, they appear brighter as they reduce in size or dimmer when they grow.
Although playful spirits are known to vary their shape wildly, most spirits limit their forms to creatures they are fond. The colour in which they glow, meanwhile, is heavily influenced by their emotions and anyone who is familiar with a nature spirit can tell how they are feeling with little effort.
Spirits naturally hover, but they often mimic the movements of walking creatures, appearing like they are walking, running or jumping when, in fact, they are hovering slightly above the ground.
Nature spirit colours
Whilst the connection between an emotion and colour differs for every nature spirits and can be chosen to be anything, below are some suggestions:

Nature spirit names
Sentient spirits often take on any and all names they take a liking to. It is not uncommon for spirits to have dozens of names given to them by friends, acquaintances or even strangers.
Nature spirit traits
As a Nature spirit, you gain the following traits.
Ability score increase. Choose one of: (a) Choose any +2; choose any other +1 (b) Choose three different +1.
Creature Type. Fey
Speed. fly 30ft (hover)
Size. Nature spirits can vary their shape and size freely, but can not maintain a size larger than medium without conscious effort.
Silent Speech. You can speak telepathically to any creature within 30 feet of you. You don't need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language. You can speak telepathically in this way to one creature at a time.
Spirit body. Your unique semi-corporeal constitution combined with your connection to nature gives you the following detriments and benefits:
- You do not require air, food, drink, or sleep.
- When taking a long rest you focus for 6 hours on absorbing energy from the world around you. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn't render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
- When speaking you are barely audible. Creatures must be within 5 feet of you to understand your words.
- You shed dim light in a 5-foot radius around you or bright light when you are tiny.
- You have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks to hide in dark environments and dimly lit environments if youare tiny
- Your appearance is generally considered eerie. You have disadvantage on persuasion and performance checks and advantage on intimidation checks.
- When carrying or wearing non-magical items or objects you must focus on it like you are concentrating on a spell dropping all non-magical items when losing concentration.
- You can draw magical energy from your body, not requiring an arcane focus to cast spells.
- When not wearing armor you have a +1 to your AC
- You can squeeze through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide, provided you are wearing and carrying nothing. You have advantage on ability checks you make to escape a grapple.
Shapeless body. As an action on your turn, you can change your shape to any other. Your size can not become smaller than tiny or larger than large. When you change your size to large with this trait, you must focus on it like you are concentrating on a spell and your speed is reduced by 10ft.
Incorporeal movement. Starting at 3rd level, you can use a bonus action on your turn you to turn incorporeal until the end of your turn or until you lose concentration. Whilst incorporeal you are under the following effects:
- You can not interact with any non-magical items or objects and can not attack or cast a spells.
- You cannot talk or otherwise make noise.
- You are invisible.
- you are immune to non-magical damage.
- You can move through other creatures and non-magical objects as if they were difficult terrain. Any magical item you are carrying is dropped in the space you were in before passing through the object.
- If you have shapeshifted into a form without a flying speed, such as through wild shape or polymorph, you can move freely through or on solid ground.
If you occupy the same spot as a solid object or creature when you turn corporeal, you are immediately shunted to the nearest unoccupied space that you can occupy and take force damage equal to twice the number of feet you are moved.
You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all expended uses on a long rest.
Starting at 5th level, you can expend 2 uses of this trait and take 1 minute instead of a bonus action to activate this trait. When activating the trait in this manner the maximum duration is extended to 10 minutes. If your concentration is broken whilst activating the trait, the expended uses are lost.
