Warlock: Chainmaster
You have chained yourself into a pact with a being who possesses a vast collection of creatures at its disposal. Your patron would own a seemingly endless amalgamation of beasts that come from the various planes of existence, and they seek to expand their stockpile.
Your patron has generously lent you one of its pets for use in your servitude to them. Collect more exotic and rare species, and your patron will continue to be happy. Fail your task and draw its ire and you will find yourself permanently chained in one of their infinite extraplanar habitats, stuffed in a box until the day you die.
Expanded Spell List
1st-level Chainmaster feature
The Chainmaster lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.
Chainmaster Expanded Spells
| Spell Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 1st | animal friendship, command |
| 2nd | detect thoughts, find steed |
| 3rd | conjure animals, revivify |
| 4th | dominate beast, locate creature |
| 5th | dominate person, geas |
Eldritch Familiar
1st-level Chainmaster feature
Your patron has lent you one of its many creatures from its menagerie to be taken under your care. You gain an Eldritch Familiar, which shares the stats of an imp, pseudodragon, quasit, or sprite (your choice). The familiar gains additional hit points equal to your warlock level.
The familiar is friendly to you and your companions. You can communicate telepathically with the familiar as long as you are within 100 feet of each other. Additionally, you can use an action to see and hear through the familiar’s senses while within 100 feet of it, though you are blind and deaf to your own surroundings.
In combat, the familiar rolls its own initiative and acts on its own turn. It obeys your commands (no action required by you). If you don't issue any, it takes the Dodge action and uses its move to avoid danger.
The familiar remains until it is reduced to 0 hit points or until you die. Anything the familiar was wearing or carrying is left behind when the familiar vanishes. If the familiar has vanished within the last hour, you can use an action to conduct a special ceremony and expend a warlock spell slot. The familiar returns after 1 minute with all its hit points restored. You can choose the same stat block or a different one.
If you later gain the Pact of the Chain feature, you treat the Eldritch Familiar as the familiar for the Pact of the Chain feature. You can also summon, bring back to life, or dismiss the Eldritch Familiar by casting the find familiar spell.
Chained Support
1st-level Chainmaster feature
You’re able to draw power from your eldritch familiar. Whenever you or the familiar makes an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw, and you are within 5 feet of each other, you can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the d20. You can do so after rolling the d20 but before knowing the result. You can roll the d4 no more than once before the start of your next turn
In addition, while the familiar occupies the same space as you, attacks made against it have disadvantage.
Ethereal Leash
6th-level Chainmaster feature
You are inextricably bound to your eldritch familiar. Whenever you or the familiar are forcibly moved to be more than 30 feet away from each other, you can use your reaction to prevent that movement. You can also use your reaction to prevent you or the familiar from being banished to another plane if both of you are on the same plane of existence. As part of the same reaction, you can force the creature that attempted to move you or the familiar to succeed on a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC or take cold damage equal to 1d6 + your Charisma modifier.
You can use these reactions a total number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), and you regain spent uses when you finish a long rest.
Strengthened Support
10th-level Chainmaster feature
The bond with your eldritch familiar has deepened. You and the familiar can be within 30 feet of each other when you roll the extra d4. This benefit also extends to any creature you command or summon.
Unleashed Form
14th-level Chainmaster feature
Your bond with your eldritch familiar has allowed you to unlock its full power. As an action, you can transform the familiar into one of the following creatures based on its current form, as shown in the True Form table (the stat blocks for these creatures are in the Monster Manual). If the familiar is occupying the same space as you, it is safely shunted into the closest unoccupied space within 5 feet of you. This form lasts for 1 minute or until it is reduced to 0 hit points, at which point it transforms back into its original form. Any additional damage remaining carries over into its original form.
Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.
True Form
| Familiar | True Form |
|---|---|
| Imp | Barbed Devil |
| Pseudodragon | Wyvern |
| Quasit | Barlgura |
| Sprite | Assassin (its Creature Type is Fey instead of Humanoid) |
Eldritch Invocations
You can use the following invocation options for your campaign.
Bonds of the Familiar
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain, 15th level
When you cast a spell with a range of self, you can also cast it on the familiar if it is within 30 feet of you. The familiar uses your spell attack bonus and save DC, and the spell treats the familiar as the caster for all other purposes.
Bloodthirsty Chains
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain, 5th level
You can add your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1) whenever the familiar rolls for initiative or makes an attack roll.
Chains of Fate
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain, 7th level
You can cast the warding bond spell without a spell slot or material components, targeting yourself and the familiar, and you must finish a long rest before you can do so again.
Chains of Sacrifice
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain, 15th level
You can offer up your familiar’s life in exchange for your own. When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can use your reaction to reduce the familiar’s hit points to 0 and you immediately regain half your hit point maximum. You must finish a long rest before you can use this reaction again.
Eldritch Summons
Prerequisite: 5th level
Your patron allows you to manifest a creature from its vast collection. You can cast the summon beast spell using a warlock spell slot, and you must finish a long rest before you can do so again.
Eldritch Conduit
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain, 7th level
When you cast a spell with a range other than self, the spell can originate from you or the familiar, as long as the familiar is within 60 feet of you.
Entangling Chains
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain, 5th level
While you and the familiar are within 30 feet of each other, you can use a bonus action to swap places with it. You can use this bonus action a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain spent uses at the end of a long rest.
Familiar’s Presence
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain
While sharing the same space as the familiar, you gain a +1 bonus to the spell attack rolls and the saving throw DCs of your spells.
Protective Chains
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain
The familiar gains a bonus to its AC equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1).
Reeling Chains
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain, 7th level
If you and the familiar are within 30 feet of each other, you can use a bonus action to teleport yourself to an unoccupied space you can see within 5 feet of the familiar. The familiar can also do the same thing, using its bonus action to teleport to an unoccupied space you can see within 5 feet of you. This teleportation can be used a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and all expended uses are restored when you finish a long rest. At 12th level, you can use this bonus action if you are within 60 feet of each other.
Swarming Minions
Prerequisite: Pact of the Chain, 15th level
You can cast the insect plague spell without a spell slot or material components, and you must finish a long rest before you can do so again.
