Rito
Said to be descended of the water-dwelling Zora, the winged Rito now reside across frigid mountaintops. The first Rito were granted their wings by the Sky Spirit Valoo, but now all gain the ability to glide in time, though they are incapable of ascending on their own. Regardless, the Rito pride themselves on their aerial techniques, and the greatest among the Rito have been known to take to the skies by creating their own updrafts.
Not all Rito are interested in commanding the winds, however. Some take pride in their musical skills, passing down legends of times long past with their moving ballads and somber elegies.
As for appearance, Rito stand a little over 7 feet tall with large feathered arms that they use for flight. Rito tend to resemble particular birds, such as a hawk, a toucan, or an eagle, and their feathers come in many different colors.
Rito Names
Rito names tend to be short and melodic, likely a symptom of the Rito's affinity for music. Otherwise, Rito naems tend to be fairly similar to the names of humans.
Rito Traits
Though Rito can vary greatly in abilities and appearance, they all have the following traits in common:
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.
Age. Rito mature and age at about the same rate as humans.
Alignment. The Rito have been known to be hospitable to those who pass through their homes and willing to help those outside of their communities when the times call for it, and so they tend towards good alignments.
Size. You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you gain this race.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Insulating Feathers. You are naturally acclimated to high altitudes, including elevations above 20,000 feet. You also automatically succeed on saving throws against the effects of extreme cold.
Feathered Arms. Your feathered arms make you capable of gliding long distances. While you are not wearing medium or heavy armor, you gain the following benefits:
- You can use your Dexterity, instead of Strength, to determine your jump distance for both long jumps and high jumps.
- When you fall at least 10 feet, you can move 2 feet horizontally for every 1 foot you descend, up to twice your movement speed
- While you are conscious and falling, you can choose to slow your rate of descent to 30 feet per round. If you land while your descent is slowed, you take no falling damage, and you land on your feet.
- You cannot use your hands while you benefit from the second and third effects of this feature.
Updraft. Starting at 3rd level, you can use your action to create an updraft. When you do so, you are lifted 60 feet straight up into the air. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you complete a long rest.
Starting at 5th level, you can use this feature as a bonus action, instead of an action.
Clawed Feet. Your clawed feet can grasp and manipulate objects, albeit less accurately than your hands can. You can carry up to 10 pounds using your claws, though you cannot use them to wield weapons or shields, nor can you use them for ability checks that would require them to move in a precise manner, such as Sleight of Hand.
Starting at 5th level, you can use your clawed feet to wield weapons while you are in the air.
Warrior Poet. You have proficiency with the shortbow, longbow, and one musical instrument of your choice.
Language. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character.
Variant: Flight
I don't care for innate fly speeds on races, and the Rito can't ascend on their own (at least in the Era of the Wilds, I have yet to play Windwaker so I'm not sure of the situation there), so this doesn't give a fly speed. If you don't like that, and your DM allows innate fly speeds, feel free to replace the Feathered Arms and Updraft features with the Flight feature, listed below.
Flight. You have a flying speed of 30 feet. To use this speed, you can't be wearing medium or heavy armor. Additionally, you cannot use your hands while in flight.
