Way of the Wanderer

Way of the Wanderer

Monks who follow the Way of the Wanderer believe learning from what is around them is just as important as learning from one's self or a master. They travel the world learning techniques from beasts of nature by observing them and practicing their behaviours. Their monasteries are not a place to visit, but are instead the wilderness and it's natural teachings. By the end of their wandering journey these monks seek a true bond with the wilderness.

Way of the Wanderer Features

Artificer Level Feature
3rd Bond of the Wilds, Bestial Techniques
6th Natural Wanderer
11th Sharp Experience
17th Explorer's Bond

Bond of the Wilds

Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, your bond with the natural world around you deepens. You gain proficiency in one skill of your choice, Animal Handling, Nature or Survival. Additionally, you learn the druidcraft cantrip and can cast the speak with animals spell, but only as a ritual.

Bestial Techniques

Starting at 3rd level you have learnt to mimic the techniques of beasts you come across. You learn a number of techniques equal to your proficiency bonus, which are detailed below. You can only use one technique per attack. Techniques that require your target to make a saving throw use your Ki save DC.

Whenever you reach a level in this class that grants the Ability Score Improvement feature you can replace a technique you know with another technique of your choice.

If a technique has prerequisites, you must meet them to learn it. A level prerequisite refers to your level in this class.

Boar's Endurance

Prerequisite: 13th level

As a reaction to being reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can spend 2 ki points to drop to 1 hit point instead. Using this technique more than once before a long rest gives you 1 level of exhaustion when used.

Constrictor's Coil

Whenever you hit a creature within 5ft of you with a melee attack, you can spend 1 ki point and immediately attempt to grapple it (no action required).

Mammoth's Trample

Prerequisite: 17th level

As a bonus action you can spend 3 ki points to move up to 20ft in a straight line towards a creature. The target must then make a Strength saving throw against your Ki save DC, if the target fails they take bludgeoning damage equal to 3 rolls of your Martial Arts die + your wisdom modifier and is knocked prone, on a success the target is not knocked prone and only takes half damage.

Octopuses' Obstruction

Prerequisite: 9th level

As an action you spend 1 ki point to create a cloud of dust or smoke in a 20ft radius around you. The area is heavily obscured and lasts for 1 minute.

Owl's Sight

As an action you can spend 1 ki point to give yourself advantage on perception checks for 1 minute.

Raven's Mimicry

As a reaction to hearing a sound such as a person speaking, a bird chirping or a door closing, you can spend 1 ki point to be able to mimic the sound for 1 hour. A creature that hears the sound can tell they are imitations with a successful Wisdom (Insight) check against your Ki save DC.

Scorpion's Sting

Prerequisite: 13th level

Whenever you hit a creature within 5ft of you with a melee attack, you can spend 2 ki points to deal additional poison damage equal to 2 rolls of your Martial Arts die + your wisdom modifier. Additionally, the target must make a Constitution saving throw against your Ki save DC or be poisoned for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of their turns.

Serpent's Senses

Prerequisite: 5th level

As an action you can spend 1 ki point to give yourself blindsight of 10ft for 1 minute.

Shark's Frenzy

Prerequisite: 17th level

As a bonus action you can spend 3 ki points to gain advantage on melee attack rolls against any creature that doesn't have all its hit points. This lasts for 1 minute.

Sloth's Steadiness

Prerequisite: 5th level

Whenever you are subjected to an effect that moves you out of your current space or knocks you prone, you can spend 1 ki point to not be moved or knocked prone.

Turtle's Defence

Prerequisite: 9th level

As a reaction to being targeted by an attack you can spend 1 ki point to give yourself +4 to AC until the start of your next turn.

Wolf's Tactics

As a bonus action you can spend 1 ki point to give yourself advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5ft of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated. This lasts until the end of your next turn.

Natural Wanderer

At 6th level, you are well versed in traversing environments. You gain one of the following benefits:

  • Moving across difficult terrain doesn’t expend additional movement for both you and allies with 5ft of you.
  • You gain a climbing and a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.

At the end of a long rest you can change which benefit you gain from this feature.

Sharp Experience

Starting at 11th level, once on each of your turns whenever you use a Bestial Technique you gain bestial empowerment. The next time you hit a target with an attack they take extra damage equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die. You can only benefit from bestial empowerment once at a time.

Additionally, as an action you can spend 4 ki points to temporarily learn a Bestial Technique you don't know for 1 minute. You must meet the prerequisites of the technique you are temporarily learning.

Explorer's Bond

At 17th level you have created an unbreakable bond by exploring the natural world and becoming one with it. As an action you can spend 4 ki points to cast the polymorph spell on yourself.

Additionally, you gain one of the following benefits:

  • You gain a flight speed of 15ft.
  • You can breathe in water.

At the end of a long rest you can change which benefit you gain from this feature.
