Roguish Archetype: The Shadow of Dread

The setting sun sheds its fleeting cinders amidst amber, crimson, and violet hues, casting long shadows stretching their silent conquest across the lands. Colors soften and mute as they give way to the encroaching night, the perfect environment for stealing and subterfuge. But not all rogues who operate in the dark have unlocked the potential of darkness. Not all rogues learn to wield fear itself.

In becoming a Shadow of Dread, you've tapped into using the shadows to your advantage, transforming the clandestine into the terrifying. Fear is a weapon for you just as much as the blades you wield. Terror strikes the heart of those you encounter, as you slink into and between the darkness, approaching for a final fatal blow.

Horrific Strikes

3rd-level Rogue: Shadow of Dread feature

You exploit the weaknesses of both body and mind. When you use Sneak Attack on a creature, you can force it to succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) or be frightened of you for 1 minute. The frightened creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the condition on itself on a success.

If the frightened creature cannot see you, it treats the last space it has seen you at as the source of its fear. It suffers the penalties of being frightened while it is within 120 feet of the source of its fear, even if it doesn't have line of sight.

Stalk the Dark

3rd-level Rogue: Shadow of Dread feature

You can drape darkness around yourself like a cloak of shadows. You can try to hide from a creature in dim light as if it were darkness, and starting and ending your movement in dim light or darkness doesn't reveal you if you are hidden from a creature and take no other actions between the start and end of that movement.

Additionally, you gain darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. If you already have darkvision from your race, its range increases by 60 feet.

Exploit Fear

9th-level Rogue: Shadow of Dread feature

Your mastery of fear allows you to strike with incredible precision. You gain advantage on weapon attacks against any target that is frightened.

True Terror

13th-level Rogue: Shadow of Dread feature

The reach of your fear knows no bounds. Your Horrific Strikes ignore frightened condition immunity on creatures with an Intelligence of 10 or higher. Instead, creatures with frightened condition immunity make the Horrific Strikes saving throw with advantage.

Umbral Aptitude

13th-level Rogue: Shadow of Dread feature

The shadows bolster you with frightful power. While you are in dim light or darkness, you can take a bonus action to perform one of the following options:
No Escape. Choose a hostile creature that you can see within 60 feet. You teleport to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of that creature. If you were hidden from a creature, you are not revealed until immediately after you take an action, or the end of your turn.
Paralyzing Fear. The next time a target of your Sneak Attack fails the Horrific Strikes saving throw within the next minute, the target becomes paralyzed in addition to becoming frightened. The paralyzed condition ends when the frightened condition from Horrific Strikes ends for this creature.
Shadow Meld. Each time a creature targets you with an attack for the duration, roll a d20 to determine whether the attack passes harmlessly into the darkness. You must roll a 16 or higher to force the attack to miss. This effect lasts for 1 minute, or until you are no longer in dim light or darkness at the end of your turn.
Spread the Panic. The next time you use Horrific Strikes within the next minute, all other creatures that can see the target in a 10-foot-radius sphere centered on the target must make the same Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 1d6 psychic damage and becomes frightened of you as if it failed the Horrific Strikes saving throw. A frightened creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the condition on itself on a success.

Each time you choose an option, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Dread and Despair

17th-level Rogue: Shadow of Dread feature

You are the incarnation of dread itself. Whenever you use Sneak Attack against a target that is frightened of you, or that you are hidden from, the damage die of your Sneak Attack increases to d8.

Additionally, you regain your expended uses of Umbral Aptitude when you finish a short or long rest.
