Ranger: The Storm Chaser

Whether they are natural, caused by raging air elementals or by magic, storms are terrifying - and for some rangers, they are fascinating and eerily beautiful. These rangers, who call themselves "Storm Chasers", are both protectors of the civilisation and seekers of thrill. When dark clouds gather on the horizon, thunder rolls and winds howl Storm Chasers warn civilians to seek shelter, while enjoying breathtaking views of these devastating manifestations of nature's wrath and the kick of getting close to such untamable beasts capable of leveling entire settlements. For a Storm Chaser, nothing is more desirable than getting a close-up view of a raging tornado - but since these monsters cannot be slain, Storm Chasers always need to be ready to get away, out of the twister's path before it consumes them.

Storm Chaser Magic

Starting at 3rd level, you learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Storm Chaser Spells table. The spells count as ranger spells for you, but don't count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Spell Level Spell
1st expeditious retreat, druidcraft
2nd misty step
3rd haste
4th Otiluke's resilient sphere
5th control winds

Early Warning

At 3rd level, your knowledge of meteorological phenomena allows you to accurately predict the formation of natural thunderstorms. You learn the druidcraft cantrip, and when you use it to predict the weather, you learn if and when thunderstorms will occur within 10 miles of your current location within the next 24 hours. Also, you are always aware of any currently active thunderstorms within 50 miles of you and know their exact locations as well as the directions they are moving in.

Furthermore, as you always need to be on the look out for danger - like a tornado that abruptly changes its path or forms anew right above your head, crystal-ball-sized hailstones and lightning strikes - you cannot be surprised and add your Wisdom modifier to your initiative rolls.

Stormy Strikes

Also at 3rd level, you learn to channel the forces that create the storms you hunt to empower your strikes. Once per turn, when you hit with a weapon attack, you can deal an extra 1d4 thunder or lightning damage (xyour choice). When you do so, you can push the target 5 feet away from or towards you in a straight line. When you reach level 11, the extra damage becomes 2d4.

Tornado Veteran

At 7th level, you have become resilient to the severe weather you expose yourself to so much and, as you have learned to spot even the most well-hidden rain-wrapped tornado in time, you can get even closer than before without risking your life. You gain resistance to lightning and thunder damage and you can see normally in areas heavily obscured by weather effects such as heavy precipitation, clouds or fog.

Moreover, as long as you are prone, you cannot be moved against your will, and neither strong winds nor the prone condition can impose disadvantage on your weapon attacks.

One with the Wind

At 11th level, your understanding of the storms you hunt has deepened, allowing you to use their winds to your own advantage. When you take the Attack action and make a weapon attack, you can fly up to 15 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. If you attack at least two different creatures with the action, you can make one additional attack with it against a third creature

Ever-Ready Weather Shelter

Starting at level 15, you can conjure up an impromptu shelter to protect your allies and yourself in a pinch to at least lessen a thunderstorm's impact on you - or to experience the ultimate thrill by intercepting a tornado, hearing its howl and feeling its winds as it passes right over you. When you or a creature you can see within 30 feet of you is about to take damage, you can use your reaction to grant all creatures of your choice within 30 feet of you resistance to all damage. When you do so, all affected creatures fall prone and are immune to forced movement until they get up. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all uses when you finish a long rest.
